Junior Jake Cavano and senior Nicolas Saveljicย each scored two goals to lead the Bruins in scoring. Sophomore Bernardo Maurizi earned the start in goal and went the distance, recording a season-high 18 saves, just one off his UCLA freshman record of 19 set a year ago against La Salle.
The Bruins led 2-0 at the end of the first period, getting goals from sophomore Tommy Gruwell (power play - 6:37) and sophomore Andy Rodgers (power play - 2:23). The Golden Bears scored the first two goals of the second period, but Saveljic answered with a power play goal (2:38) to put the Bruins back in front. After Cal tied it at 3-3, Saveljicย scored on another man advantage (1:53)ย to give UCLA a 4-3 lead at the break.
California outscored UCLA 3-2 in the third period to send it to the fourth, tied at 6-6. Both teams only managed to score one goal in the fourth. Bailey Jarvis put the Bruins in front with a score from the front court (7:01) and Cal got an equalizer from Nikolaos Papanikolaouย (5:34) to end the scoring in regulation all tied at 7-7.
Mistakes proved costly to the Bruins, which gave up a penalty goal to Cal's Alika Naone as he would give the Golden Bears their first lead of the game in the first overtime period at 8-7 with 2:12 to go. Cavano scored his second of the game on a power play (1:36) to tie it at 8-8. But Cal ended the game with three unanswered goals, beginning with the eventual game-winner from Nikos Delagrammatikasย with just 0:14 left in the first overtime period. Delagrammatikas scored a goal from the front court (0:50) late in the second overtime periodย to seal the win. The Golden Bears would add another penalty score, this time from Jack Deely (0:14), to provide the 11-8 final.
Adrian Weinbergย registered 13 saves for California, which was led in scoring by Deely and Delagrammatikas, each with a hat trick.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. PT when they take on No. 1ย Stanfordย (1-0, 1-0 MPSF) at USC's Uytengsuย Aquatics Center.
