TEMPE, Ariz. --ย No. 2ย UCLA (8-2, 6-2ย MPSF) shook off another slow start and used a golden goal from sophomore Hannah Palmer to post an 11-10 overtime win at No. 5 Arizona State (12-7, 6-4ย MPSF) on Sunday morningย at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. With the win, the Bruins improved to 28-2 all-time against the Sun Devils.

Palmer led the Bruins with a game-high-tying three goals. Sophomore Fiona Kuesis and junior Katrina Drake added two goals apiece for UCLA. Senior Jahmea Bent got the start in the cage and went the distance, recording eight saves while allowing 10ย goals.

The Bruins trailed 2-0 at the end of the first period. UCLA would trail by as many as three goals twice, including the last time at 5-2 at halftime.

UCLA would begin the comeback in the third period where it outscored the Sun Devils 6-3. Palmer netted her second goal of the game (7:36) and senior Brooke Maxsonย scored on a power play (6:40) to trim ASU's lead to 5-4. Freshman Malia Allen tied the game at 5-5 (4:15) and then both teams would score three more goals to take an 8-8 tie into the fourth period. After tying the game at 5-5, the Bruins got a power play goal fromย Drake (3:14), a second goal from Kuesisย (1:34) and then head coach Adam Wright went to his playbook and put in Abbi Hill in a goalie cap to give the Bruins a 7-6 advantage for the final possession of the period. The Bruins executed the play to perfection with freshman Anneliese Miller scoring the game-tying goal with just two seconds left in the third quarter.

After ASU took the lead with a goal from Blaire McDowell (6:29) to open the scoring in the fourth period, Drake tied things at 9-9 with her second goal of the game on a counter (2:17). That score would hold to the end of regulation.

The Bruins took a 10-9 lead through the end of the first overtime period after junior Ava Johnson scored a power play goal (2:13). Then ASU forced sudden death after Luca Petovary scored a goal from the front court (1:12) in the second overtime period. That set up the game-winning heroics by Palmer. After both teams made consecutive stops to open the sudden death period, Palmer took a pass from sophomore Abbi Hill and skipped it past two defenders and the ASU goalie for the 11-10 with just 12 seconds remaining.

Chelsea Karimazondoย registered 15 saves for the Sun Devils, who were led by Petovary'sย hat trick.

UCLAย returns to action tomorrow when they continue the four-game road trip in four days with a visit to No. 15 Indiana at 2:00 p.m. PDT.
