LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Megan Faraimo set a new career high with 17 strikeouts on Saturday, spinning a one-hit shutout of Oregon State in No. 2 UCLA's 7-0 victory on Saturday at Easton Stadium.
Faraimo (11-2) struck out three in the first and two in the second in 1-2-3 innings. After a leadoff error and two more strikeouts in the third, Faraimo struck out three in both the fourth and fifth innings, adding one in the sixth and three more in a 1-2-3 seventh. The only other two base runners allowed were a leadoff double in the fifth and a hit by pitch in the sixth.
Offensively, the Bruins (24-2, 7-1 Pac-12) had seven hits from six different players, as junior Kinsley Washington posted a pair.
UCLA scored twice in the first inning on four hits, including a trio of doubles. With one out, junior Briana Perez doubled, stole third and scored on a two-bagger from senior Rachel Garcia. Following a single by junior Delanie Wisz to get Garcia to third, freshman Maya Brady doubled to bring in the Bruins' second run.
The Bruins broke it open with five in the fifth. Garcia and Wisz each walked to open the inning, with freshman Lauryn Carter running for Garcia. After a grounder moved both up a base, sophomore Anna Vines reached on an error at first, as both Carter and Wisz scored to make it 4-0. One out later, and with freshman Thessa Malau'ulu at first, Washington doubled to the gap to score Malau'ulu to increase the lead to 5-0. Freshman Alyssa Garcia followed with a home run to right, her third of the season, to make it 7-0.
UCLA and Oregon State finish up the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
