Bruins Bested at No. 7 Washington

April 08, 2021 | Men's Soccer

SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 7 Washington scored four goals in the first half and UCLA was unable to overcome the deficit in a 5-1 loss on Thursday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Riley Ferch netted the Bruins' (2-7-2, 1-6-2) goal in the contest, finishing off a nice passing sequence in the offensive third to grab his second score of the season.

Junior forward Kevin Diaz started the scoring sequence by laying off a pass for sophomore winger Constantinos Michaelides down the left flank, then Michaelides one-timed a low cross into the box.

Making a run through the middle of the box, Ferch redirected the cross from close range past Washington keeper Sam Fowler to make it a 4-1 contest at the 68:09 mark.

That was as close as the Bruins would get however, as Nick Scardina netted his second goal of the game in the 77th minute to re-establish the four-goal lead for Washington (10-2-0, 7-2-0) and provide the game's final score line.

Scardina was one of two Huskies to record a brace on Thursday, joining defender Kendall Burks who scored in the 13th and 16th minutes off far post headers to give the hosts an early 2-0 lead. Scardina made it a three-goal lead with a marker at 19:26 of the first half, followed by a Dylan Teves goal in the 26th minute.

The Bruins were outshot (18-9) for just the second time in their last six games. UCLA edged Washington in shots for the second half, 6-5.

UCLA concludes the 2020-21 campaign next Saturday, Apr. 17, with a home contest against California. That game – which will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks – is slated for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
