
Malabuyo, Chiles, Lee to Compete at Olympic Trials

The top two all-around finishers after combining the scores from two days of competition June 25 and 27 will automatically qualify to the Olympic team. The other two team positions, along with one individual position, will be determined by a selection committee following the competition.

Chiles has placed in the Top 3 in the all-around each of her three major competitions this year, winning the Winter Cup, placing second at the GK U.S. Classic and finishing third at the U.S. Championships. She has been extremely consistent this season, scoring 56.95 or higher over four days of competition at those three events (57.05 at Winter Cup, 57.10 at U.S. Classic, 56.90 at U.S. Championships day one, career-high 57.55 at U.S. Championships day two). At the U.S. Championships, she placed third on vault and fourth on bars, beam and floor.
Lee earned third place in the all-around and second place on floor at the Winter Cup and was eighth in the all-around with a 53.90 at the GK U.S. Classic, where she also placed fourth on floor and sixth on beam. At the U.S. Championships, she scored 53.70 on day one and improved to a season-best 54.55 on day two after scoring 13.0 or higher on all four events, putting her in 13th place overall. She also earned a seventh-place finish on beam after scoring 13.85 and 13.65.
Malabuyo had a strong showing at the U.S. Championships, finishing in fourth place in the all-around with a combined score of 110.450 (54.450 on day one, 56.000 on day two), sixth on beam and seventh on bars and floor. Her day two beam score of 14.60 was the third-highest in the competition. At the GK U.S. Classic, she competed on two events, earning Top 10 finishes on bars (seventh, 13.75) and beam (ninth, 13.30). She also placed sixth on beam at the Winter Cup.
All three future Bruins will rotate together. On day one, they will begin the meet on uneven bars. On day two, they will start on vault.
UCLA will be represented at the 2020 Olympics by at least two Bruins โ alumna Danusia Francis has qualified as an individual, representing Jamaica, and freshman Brooklyn Moors will compete for Team Canada. UCLA Gymnastics has had an Olympian at each Olympic Games since 1984.
