Softball
The United States softball team recorded a 2-0 victory over Italy in the opening contest of the 2020 Tokyo Games on Wednesday afternoon in Japan. Delaney Spaulding started at shortstop for Team USA, batting seventh, and was hitless in three at-bats. She did record two putouts and two assists on defense. Rachel Garcia came in as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth, grounding out. Ally Carda and Bubba Nickles did not play.
The U.S. continues round robin play on Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Japan) against Canada at 5 p.m. PT. The game will air live on NBCSN and stream on NBCOlympics.com.

Australia, Canada and the United States opened group play on Wednesday in Tokyo, with Australia taking a 2-1 win over New Zealand, Canada tying host Japan, 1-1, and the U.S. falling to Sweden, 3-0.
Teagan Micah was available off the bench for Australia, which used a pair of first-half goals to defeat New Zealand, who scored in stoppage time.
Jessie Fleming started and played the full 90 for Canada in her second Olympic Games. Canada jumped ahead to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute on a goal by Christine Sinclair, but Japan tied in the 84th minute.
Abby Dahlkemper and Sam Mewis made their Olympic debuts, earning the start for the U.S. against Sweden. Dahlkemper played the full 90, and Mewis played the first half. The 3-0 loss snapped the United States'ย 44-game unbeaten streak.
Group play resumes on Saturday, July 24. Canada will play Chile at 12:30 a.m. PT on Telemundo and NBCOlympics.com. Australia will face Sweden at 1:30 a.m. PT on NBCSN and NBCOlympics.com. The U.S. will try to rebound against New Zealand at 4:30 a.m. PT on NBCSN and NBCOlympics.com.
