Men's Basketball
Zach LaVine scored 13 points and added eight assists and four rebounds, while Jrue Holiday registered eight points, four rebounds and three assists as the U.S. men's basketball team defeated Iran, 120-66, in its second Group A contest on Wednesday. Team USA led Iran at halftime, 60-30, in its second game of the 2020 Olympics and finished the contest having shot 55 percent from the field.

LaVine was one of six Americans to score in double figures, connecting on 3 of 5 field goal attempts and all five of his free throw attempts.

Team USA will return to action with its final Group A contest against the Czech Republic on Saturday, July 31. Game time is scheduled for 5 a.m. PT (8 a.m. ET) at Saitama Super Arena in Japan. ย

Men's Volleyball
Coach John Speraw's U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team, featuring Bruins Garrett Muagututia (UCLA 2007-10) and Mitch Stahl (UCLA 2014-17), improved its record to 2-1 in pool play in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a 3-1 victory over Tunisia. Scores of the Preliminary Round Pool B match were 25-14, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23.

Both Bruins saw action in the match against Tunisia. Stahl came off the bench to register six kills, a block and an ace. He was credited with all six of his kills in the third and fourth sets as the U.S. rebounded after dropping the second set of the match. Muagututia, also saw action as a reserve but did not record stats.

The U.S. men will face the 2016 gold medalists from Brazil (2-0), currently listed as the top team in the World, on July 29 (CNBC, NBCOlympics.com) at 7:05 p.m. PT. The U.S. closes out pool play against 8th-ranked Argentina (0-2) on August 1. The U.S. has won the Olympic gold medal in 1984, 1988 and 2008.

The top four teams in each of the two pools will advance to the Quarterfinals which will be played on August 2 and 3. Semifinal matches are slated for August 4 and 5. The medal matches will be contested on August 6 and August 7.

Rowing
Marie Jacquet competed for France on Wednesday in the women's quadruple sculls "Final B" race, finishing in third place out of four competitors. Great Britain won the "Final B" competition with a time of 6:25.14. Rounding out the field was New Zealand (6:29.00), France (6:29.70) and the United States (6:30.03). This marked the final rowing competition for Jacquet at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Ena Shibahara, who suffered a three-set loss in the opening round of women's doubles play, bounced back to secure her first-career Olympics win at the outset of the mixed competition. Playing alongside another former Pac-12 standout in Ben McLachlan of California, Shibahara helped give host Japan a 6-3, 7-6(3) victory against Andrey Golubev and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.

The first set did not see a break of serve until Shibahara and McLachlan issued one at 4-3. That was all they needed. The second set was more of the same, with each pair holding until the tiebreaker. There, Shibahara and McLachlan took the first three points and six of the initial seven en route to the victory.

Next up for Shibahara and McLachlan is a date with the fourth-seeded pair of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev, representing the Russia Olympic Committee. That match, the day's second on Court 2, will begin at approximately 1 a.m. PT Thursday.

Women's Swimming
Ting Wen Quah opened up her time in Tokyo by finishing eighth in the fourth heat of the women's 100-meter freestyle on Wednesday. Representing Singapore, Quah posted a time of 56.36.

Twice voted UCLA's Most Valuable Swimmer during her time in Westwood, the Tokyo Games marks Quah's third career trip to the Olympics following appearances in 2008 and 2016. She is also slated to compete in the women's 50 meter freestyle on Friday. ย

Women's Water Polo
The U.S. Women's Water Polo Team suffered its first loss at the Tokyo Olympic Games today falling to Hungary in a thriller, 10-9. The loss was the first in 2021 for Team USA, their first loss at the Olympics since the final at the 2008 Olympic Games and just the program's fourth loss since the 2016 Olympic Games. Team USA currently stands at 2-1 in Group B action with one game remaining.

All three Bruins started the game for Team USA with Maddie Musselman leading the offensive attack with a hat trick. She also added one field block. Right behind her in scoring was Rachel Fattal, who added two goals and also contributed two steals, one field block, and won one sprint. Defender Alys Williams couldn't convert on any of her three shots, but played solid defense and tallied one steal.

The Americans will conclude pool play with the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) on Friday, July 30 at 3:30 p.m. local time (11:30 p.m. PDT on Thursday, July 29). The match will be televised on CNBC and streamed on NBCOlympics.
