LOS ANGELES – USA Baseball on Tuesday afternoon announced that UCLA sophomore right-hander Jake Brooks has been named to the 2022 Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List.
The midseason watch list features 45 of the nation's top amateur players. Brooks is one of 26 athletes who has played his way onto the watch list since the preseason list was announced ahead of Opening Day. The winner of the 44th Golden Spikes Award will be announced on Friday, Jun. 24 on ESPN.
Brooks is in the midst of a breakout campaign for the Bruins, posting a 5-2 record with a 2.12 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings to this point of the season.
The Fountain Valley, Calif. native has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six of seven starts this year, and has completed at least seven innings four times. As of Apr. 5, he leads the Pac-12 in WHIP (0.75), walks per nine innings (1.16), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (7.0).
He's had a number of standout starts over the course of the season. He limited CSUN to two hits over five shutout innings on Opening Day (Feb. 18), struck out a career-high 12 over seven scoreless innings against UC Riverside on Feb. 25, was named to the Shriner's Children's College Classic All-Tournament Team after a complete game effort against Baylor at Minute Maid Park on Mar. 4, and held a potent Oregon offense to two runs over eight-plus innings on Apr. 1.
USA Baseball will announce the semifinalists for the 2022 Golden Spikes Award on May 24.
