Pierre-Webster, Leger Down School Record to Cap Saturday Meets

January 29, 2022 | Track & Field

A pair of Bruins ducked under the previous UCLA indoor record in the 200m on Saturday, as Makenzy Pierre-Webster (23.33) and Catherine Leger (23.43) became the fastest and second-fastest Bruin women all-time in the event, respectively. Both women broke Monique Henderson's previous indoor record of 23.49, set back in 2002.
ย
The historic women's 200m race highlighted an impressive day for UCLA Track & Field, as the program's all-time record books were shaken up at the UNM Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M., and the UW Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
ย
Maddy Doane was sixth overall in the 200m, clocking the eighth-fastest indoor time in program history at 24.11. Sophia Alexander was 14th overall at 24.95.

Ismail Turner finished third overall in the men's 200m with a time of 21.21, the sixth-fastest mark in UCLA indoor history.

UCLA's men's 4x400m relay squad also checked in on the all-time program charts, winning the relay competition with a time of 3:09.65. The Bruins' quartet of Turner, Cameron Reynolds, Zaylon Thomas, and Chase Wells is now fourth all-time in UCLA indoor history. The women's squad of Doane, Leger, Pierre-Webster, and Dakota Stanly also picked up the win in Albuquerque, going 3:48.54 for the win.
ย
The Bruin distance squad headed up to Seattle for various middle and long distance events, with Anthony Stone leading the way with a lifetime-best time of 4:03.43 in the mile. Stone is now the No. 9 UCLA all-time performer in the indoor mile. Peter Herold and Ronan McMahon-Staggs entered the UCLA record books in the 3000m, going 12-18 in the race in Seattle with times of 7:59.67 and 8:02.89, respectively. Herold became just the sixth-ever Bruin to break the eight-minute barrier in the event and McMahon-Staggs is now ninth all-time in indoor program history.
ย
Bruin freshman Sydney Johnson compiled a trio of season-best marks in Albuquerque, posting season-best marks in the 60m (7.98), 60H (8.82), and long jump (5.83m, 19-01.50). Lyvante Su'emai picked up a season-best mark of 15.28m (50-01.75) in the women's shot put, finishing fourth overall with a mark that bettered her previous best by three feet.
