UCLA Cooks up 3-0 Shutout Win at Utah

October 23, 2022 | Women's Soccer

Salt Lake City, Utah – Top-ranked UCLA recorded its 10th shutout of the season, downing Utah 3-0 on the strength of two first-half goals by Lexi Wright and Sofia Cook and a second-half goal by Ally Cook. With the win, the Bruins improve to 15-1 overall, 7-1 in Pac-12 play.

Wright opened the scoring in the 18th minute with her fifth goal of the year and second of the weekend. MacKenzee Vance set up the play by feeding Quincy McMahon down the left side. McMahon dribbled it into the box before sending a cross in to Wright, who one-timed it past Utah goalkeeper Kasey Wardle into the lower right corner.

Sofia Cook doubled the Bruins' lead in the 32nd minute, picking Kylee Geis's pocket in the Bruins' third of the field and taking it into an open field before firing just at the edge of the box. Her right-footed rocket beat a diving Wardle for her sixth goal of the season and second of the weekend.

Utah had a chance to get on the board in the 38th minute, but Kaela Standish's shot hit the left corner of the crossbar. Two minutes later, Bruin freshman Bridgette Marin-Valencia suffered the same fate, hitting the crossbar on a shot of her own. Cook also came close to scoring in the 44th minute following Kali Trevithick's cross to the left corner, but her shot was saved by Wardle, and the Bruins went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The Utes were the early aggressors in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Utah earned a free kick, which led to a loose ball in the box that UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy smothered. Five minutes later, following a corner kick, Regan Fuller lofted a long-distance shot that missed just high. Taliana Kaufusi had a shot a minute later that hit the right post, and Courtney Brown had a shot saved by Brzykcy.

But the Bruin defense locked it down from there and paved the way for Ally Cook's 73rd minute insurance goal. After stealing the ball from a Utah player, Emma Egizii hit Ally Cook up the field, and Cook blew past the defenders and drew Wardle out before angling a left-footed shot far post into the empty net. The goal was her fourth of the season.

Brzykcy, who had three saves, and freshman Neeku Purcell, who had one save in the final minute, combined for the shutout.

UCLA wraps up its regular season home schedule next week when it hosts Washington State on Thursday, Oct. 27 and Washington for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 30. Fans are encouraged to buy tickets in advance at www.uclabruins.com/tickets.
