UCLA running back Zach Charbonnet was announced as the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week and as the Week 9 Rose Bowl Game Pac-12 Player of the Week for his efforts in leading the Bruins to a win over Stanford in the Rose Bowl.
Charbonnet equaled his career-highs with 198 yards rushing and three touchdowns against Stanford. He caught five passes for an additional 61 yards. Charbonnet leads the nation with a 7.53 yards per carry average which would equal UCLA's school record mark. He has rushed for over 100 yards in each of the last five Bruin games and in six games overall this season. Charbonnet has rushed for at least one touchdown in each of his last nine Pac-12 games and run for at least 100 yards in each of his last seven Pac-12 games. He enters this week's action leading the Pac-12 in rushing with a 137.7 yards per game average and is the only conference performer averaging over 100 yards per game this season. The senior also leads the Pac-12 in All-Purpose Yards per game (170.86), a mark which rates second nationally.
Since 1990, the Doak Walker Award has honored the top running back in college football. It is named in honor of Doak Walker, a running back who played for the SMU Mustangs from 1945-49 and in the NFL, for the Detroit Lions, from 1950 to 1955. The player is selected by the award's National Selection Committee, which consists of notable sportswriters, television commentators, analysts, radio sports personalities and former All-America and NFL All-Pro football players.
The No. 10 Bruins will play at Arizona State on Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. PT contest to be broadcast by FS1. Next Saturday, UCLA returns to Rose Bowl Stadium for a battle with Arizona. The time is to be determined.
