UCLA Gymnastics Hosts Meet the Bruins Thursday Night

December 14, 2022 | Gymnastics

UCLA Gymnastics returns for the 2023 season on Thursday, Dec. 15 with the annual Meet the Bruins event in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Meet the Bruins begins at 6pm, with doors opening at 5pm. Admission is free.
ย
The season preview event will give fans their first look at the Bruins under first-year head coach Janelle McDonald, who came to UCLA in May with two decades of coaching experience under her belt, including four successful seasons as an assistant coach at California. Other new faces on the squad include the freshman class of CIena Alipio, Maddie Anyimi, Selena Harris and Clara Wren. Harris, an eight-time Level 10 national champion, was rated the No. 1 recruit in the 2023 freshman class by College Gym News. Alipio was a four-time member of U.S. National Team and the silver medalist on balance beam at the 2022 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. Anyimi was a two-time Level 10 National Championships competitor, and Wren was a Top 5 finisher on uneven bars at the 2022 Regional Championships. ย ย
ย
UCLA returns a star-studded lineup, led by 2020 Olympic silver medalist Jordan Chiles, who spent her off-season winning three medals at the World Championships (team gold, vault and floor silver), two medals at the World Challenge Cup in Paris (floor gold, vault silver) and three medals at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships (all-around, bars, floor bronze). Chiles is one of three returning All-Americans, along with four-time All-American Chae Campbell and three-time All-American Margzetta Frazier. Also back are 2020 U.S. Olympic team alternate and All-Pac-12 beamer Emma Malabuyo, 2020 Canadian Olympian Brooklyn Moors, 2018 World beam silver medalist Ana Padurariu and 2020 Olympic Trials competitor Emily Lee, who will be making her UCLA debut after sitting out the 2022 season due to injury.
ย
The format of the event will be similar to an intrasquad, with team members showing routines on vault first, then uneven bars, balance beam and finishing on floor exercise. There will be four celebrity judges โ€“ UCLA Gymnastics legends Nia Dennis, Felicia Hano, Gracie Kramer and Vanessa Zamarripa. All four alumnae are NCAA Champions and perfect 10 scorers. ย
ย
Meet the Bruins will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Insider, with Nick Koop and JaNay Honest on the call. Pac-12 Insider is streamed online on pac-12.com/pac-12-insider. Pac-12 Insider is also available on Sling, Roku, Samsung TV Plus, Redbox, Tubi and Xumo.
ย
The 2023 season officially kicks off on Jan. 7 at the Super 16 in Las Vegas. The Bruins' home opener is Jan. 29 against Oregon State at 3pm. Tickets for the 2023 meets, along with season tickets, are on sale now at uclabruins.com/tickets.
