Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker at Washington State, 66-65

Pullman, Wash. – Despite registering a dominant fourth quarter, the UCLA women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss at Washington State on Friday evening, falling 66-65 to the Cougars at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.
The final two minutes of Friday's contest was a back-and-forth affair, as both teams made late buckets to force several lead changes. Although Washington State (15-7 overall; 7-4 Pac-12) took a 63-61 lead with just under two minutes to play following a 3-pointer from Ula Motuga, the Bruins (10-8 overall; 5-6 Pac-12) answered right back, moving out to their own two-point advantage with consecutive made baskets from Camryn Brown and Charisma Osborne.
UCLA held possession and a 65-63 advantage with 20 seconds to play, however a steal from Bella Murekatete gave the Cougars a lifeline. The final 15 seconds were hectic, with Osborne blocking a Krystal Leger-Walker layup with just seven seconds remaining. An offensive rebound gave the ball back to the Cougars and Charlisse Leger-Walker got off turnaround jumper with just two seconds left. The shot missed, however Krystal got the rebound and was able to convert a layup to tie the game at 65-65 with one second left on the clock. Unfortunately for the Bruins, IImar'I Thomas was called for a foul on the play, giving Washington State a free throw, which Leger-Walker converted to propel the Cougars to a 66-65 win.
"We just had so many stops where we didn't come up with the rebound and that right there was the story of this game," said the Michael Price Family Head Women's Basketball Coach Cori Close. "We can't do anything about this game now. We have to put it in our rearview mirror and attack the opportunities in front of us and that's what we are going to do."
Friday's game essentially came down to the pivotal fourth quarter, where the Bruins started on a 12-0 run to take a 54-47 lead. It was actually a 14-0 run which started on a Thomas layup to end the third quarter.
Osborne, who scored her first points of the game on a made shot at the buzzer to end the first half, led all scorers on the evening with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-18 shooting. She also made three 3-pointers, putting her over 150 for her career (152).
Chantel Horvat's three points also gave her 500 for her career at UCLA. Another bright spot for the Bruins was the return on Angela Dugalic, who made her season debut on Friday after returning from injury.
UCLA was a perfect 10-0 on the season when holding opponents to under 70 points, a streak snapped by the Cougars on Friday.
Next up for the Bruins is a road game against Washington in Seattle this Sunday at Noon. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
