No. 2 UCLA Advances in NCAA Championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- No. 2 UCLA (32-7) advanced to the double-elimination bracket of the 2022 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship after defeating No. 18 Stetson (23-17), 3-2, on Wednesday afternoon in a single-elimination dual at Gulf Beach Place. UCLA improved to 4-0 all-time against the Hatters.
UCLA's Lea Monkhouse and Jessie Smith put the Bruins up 1-0 with a 21-14, 21-13 win on court three over Stetson's Gabriella Bramante and .Lauren Della.
The Bruins quickly went up 2-0 when Lexy Denaburg and Abby Van Winkle defeated the Hatters' Shae Henson and Kylie Neuschaeferova, 21-17, 21-14.
The Hatters got on the board when Noelle Weintraub and Karin Zolnercikova defeated UCLA's freshman pair of Natalie Myszkowski and Sophie Moore on court five, 21-18, 21-17.
Stetson tied the dual at 2-2 when Audrey Gauthier and Colene Hamilton defeated the Bruins' Rileigh Powers and Marlie Monserez in two tight sets, 23-21, 21-19.
It all came down to court two where Stetson's Anete Namike and Carolina Ferraris took the first set off of UCLA's Jaden Whitmarsh and Devon Newberry, 21-19. The Bruins responded to take the second set, 21-16, to force a winner-take-all third set. It was tied at 10s, 11s, and 12s, until the UCLA duo won a natural point after a sideout to lead 14-12. After a sideout by Stetson, they switched it up and served Newberry on match point and after a great pass and then perfect set by Whitmarsh, Newberry pounded the sand for a thumping kill that sent the Bruins into the double-elimination bracket.
UCLA will face No. 6 LSU on Friday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m. CT/10:00 a.m. PT at Gulf Beach Place on ESPNU.
