UCLA Wins Pac-12 Gymnastics Opener at Washington, 196.900-195.825

January 21, 2023 | Gymnastics

No. 4 UCLA won its Pac-12 opener on Saturday afternoon at No. 22 Washington, outscoring the host Huskies, 196.900-195.825. For the second consecutive week, freshman Selena Harris won the all-around with a score of 39.725. She also took first place on three events, winning vault with a 9.950, beam with a 9.925 and tying for first with teammate Jordan Chiles on bars with a 9.925. Chiles also tied for first on floor with Washington's Amara Cunningham with a 9.950.

The Bruins led from start to finish, taking a 49.350-48.750 lead after the first rotation thanks to six scores of 9.800 or higher on uneven bars. Harris and Chiles led the Bruins with a pair of 9.925s, and Margzetta Frazier added a 9.875. Kalyany Steele, competing for just the third time in the last two seasons, scored 9.825, and Chae Campbell and Emily Lee opened with scores of 9.800.

The Bruins totaled just 49.125 on vault but still extended their lead to 0.825, 98.475-97.650. Harris led the Bruin vaulters with a 9.950 after sticking her Yurchenko 1.5. Campbell also stuck her vault, a 9.95-valued Yurchenko full, and scored 9.900. Lee tied her career-high with a clean 9.850. The Huskies scored 48.900 on uneven bars. Chiles had an uncharacteristically low 9.650 after landing short on her Yurchenko double full, and Maddie Anyimi and Frazier had a few bounces on their Yurchenko fulls that dropped their scores to 9.7 and 9.725, respectively. Frazier's vault, however, gave her a big milestone of 100 consecutive routines without a fall in her collegiate career. UCLA brought the floor party to Seattle, totaling 49.475 thanks to six scores of 9.825 or higher, including three of 9.925+. Chiles rebounded from her short vault to score a team-high 9.950, and Harris and Campbell each scored 9.925. Senior Chloe Lashbrooke, competing for the first time since 2020, scored 9.850, and Katie McNamara and Emma Malabuyo each scored 9.825, a season-high for McNamara. After Washington scored 48.925 on beam, the Bruins increased their lead to 1.325 points, 147.950-146.625. A few wobbles in the final rotation on beam put UCLA at under 49 for the first time on any event this season with a 48.950, but the Bruins showed tremendous fight to stay on the apparatus and extend their streak to three meets with no falls. Harris once again scored 9.925, her fourth 9.925+ score of the meet. Lee continued her solid showing, leading off with a 9.825 to give her three 9.8 scores on her three events, and Malabuyo hit a 9.775 to close the meet. The Bruins will return home to host their first home meet of the season on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 3pm against Oregon State. Tickets are on sale now at uclabruins.com/tickets.
