UCLA, Oregon State Tie with Scores of 197.275

January 29, 2023 | Gymnastics

LOS ANGELES - After a late score inquiry, No. 6 UCLA and No. 16 Oregon State finished in a tie with matching scores of 197.275 in Sunday's UCLA home opener. The Bruins did just enough on floor exercise to erase a 0.225 deficit, but what was initially announced as an unofficial UCLA win was adjusted later to a tie after judges conferred on the start value of Beaver gymnast Jenna Domingo, increasing her beam score half a tenth to 9.900.

A UCLA home opener record crowd of 7,702 fans in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom were treated to top-notch performances from Olympic medalists Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey. The 2021 World Championship teammates placed first on every event, with Chiles winning bars with a 9.975, Chiles and Carey tying on floor with 9.975s, and Carey winning vault (9.950) and beam (9.925). Carey also won the all-around with a 39.775, just ahead of Chiles, who was second with a 39.700.

The Bruins (4-3-1, 1-0-1 in Pac-12 play) jumped out to a .225 lead after the first rotation thanks to a season-high 49.400 on the vault, while Oregon State (7-3-1, 0-0-1 Pac-12) scored 49.175 on bars. Three Bruins had season-highs as Maddie Anyimi and Margzetta Frazier each scored 9.825, and Chae Campbell tied her season-best with a 9.925 on her stuck Yurchenko full. Selena Harris matched Campbell's 9.925 with a stuck Yurchenko 1.5, and Chiles wrapped up the Bruins' season-high mark with a 9.900 on a Yurchenko double full.

The Bruins followed with a 49.450 on bars to extend their lead to 0.475, 98.850-98.375. UCLA posted four more season-highs on bars, led by Chiles' second 9.975 in four meets and another 9.925 from Harris. Also scoring season-highs were Kalyany Steele with a 9.850 and Campbell, whose season-high-tying 9.825 gave her a big milestone of 100 straight routines without a fall. Ana Padurariu also hit a season-high score, with hers coming after an equipment malfunction caused her to dismount the bars early in her routine. She performed beautifully following the restart of her routine, but her score was initially awarded 9.325 then changed to a 9.875 following an inquiry, when the fall was ruled to be caused by the equipment failure.

A couple of falls on the beam – UCLA's first falls of the season - in rotation three saw the Bruins' lead evaporate. Oregon State outscored UCLA in the rotation, 49.500-48.800, to take a 0.225 lead, 147.875-147.650. The rotation started out strong with Lee leading off with a career-high 9.900, but it would turn out to be the Bruins' best score on beam. Ciena Alipio followed with a 9.800, but Campbell fell for just the second time in her entire career. Chiles got the Bruins back on track with a 9.850, and Harris followed with a 9.875, but a fall by Emma Malabuyo meant that UCLA would have to count her 9.375. That set up a showdown where both teams were on their best events. Oregon State finished on beam, where the Beavers are ranked No. 5 nationally, and UCLA moved to floor, where the Bruins are ranked No. 2 nationally. Lee made her debut on floor with a 9.85 in the leadoff spot. Malabuyo continued the comeback, shaking off her fall on beam to score 9.875. Frazier scored a 9.900 on her first floor routine in Pauley since 2021, and then Harris posted a season-high-tying 9.925. Chiles turned in a season-high 9.975, receiving a 10 from one judge, and Campbell also tied her season-high on floor with a 9.95 to close the meet. The Bruins head to Utah for a Friday night dual meet on Feb. 3 that will be televised on ESPN2 at 6:00 p.m. PT.
