UCLA went 1-0 this past week with a 13-9 win at home over No. 2 California on Saturday, Oct. 28. The win was the third over the two-time defending NCAA Champions this season and was the third time the Bruins were victorious in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 battle this season (all against the Golden Bears). The victory helped UCLA remain undefeated on the year at 21-0 and 5-0 in the MPSF West and the 21-game winning streak is tied for the fourth-longest in school history (1971-72). The win also locked down the No. 1 seed for the Bruins at the upcoming MPSF Championship (Nov. 17-19 at California).
Griggs, a goalkeeperย out of Riverside, Calif., and Riverside Poly High School,ย had another double-digit save effort with 13 against the Golden Bears. The Bruins and Griggs were just the second team this season to hold the two-time defending NCAA Champions to single-digit scoring.
Liechty, a utility out of Newport Beach, Calif.,ย and Newport Harbor HS,ย scored his fourth hat trick of the season (on four shots) in the win over the Golden Bears. He had been held scoreless in the two previous wins over Cal until Saturday's matchup. He also drew three exclusions against the Golden Bears.
This is Griggs' third (in the last four weeks) and Liechty's second career MPSF award.
