Bruins Fall to CSUN, 76-72, in Pauley Pavilion

December 19, 2023 | Men's Basketball

LOS ANGELES Sebastian Mack scored 27 points and Dylan Andrews added 22 points, but the UCLA men's basketball team could not overcome a 14-point halftime deficit and lost to CSUN, 76-72, at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Tuesday night.

Mack, a 6-foot-3 freshman, scored 21 of his team-leading 27 points in the second half. Andrews, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, registered 18 points in the second half. Despite the strong second half rally on Tuesday, UCLA (5-5) could not complete the comeback. The Bruins' 29-game home winning streak was snapped, as UCLA absorbed its first loss in Pauley since falling in overtime to Oregon on Jan. 13, 2022

Mack shot 6-for-10 from the field and 13-for-16 at the foul line in the loss, while Andrews added 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field.

Five Matadors finished in double figures on Tuesday night, led by Dionte Bostick's 18 points and seven rebounds. The visiting Matadors registered their second win against UCLA in 11 all-time meetings.

"I'm just trying to find guys who will compete, physically, and earn it in practice, and I thought Brandon Williams, he competes," said Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach. "He's young, he's got a great future, but right now it's because he listens to me and he plays hard. We're struggling to find that. The truth of it is anytime you give up 34 points in the paint and 17 free throws, that's 51 on layups and free throws. Remember what I told you three days ago, in Atlanta? Layups and free throws win games. Everybody wants to talk about three-point shooting. That's not what wins games. Eighty percent of games, 85 maybe, layups and free throws. Even in the NBA. Teams make them."

As a team, the Bruins made 23 of 35 free throws against CSUN (65.7 percent) and shot 9-for-24 from beyond the 3-point arc (37.5 percent).

CSUN (8-3) led UCLA throughout the game on Tuesday. The Matadors raced ahead 16-5 in the game's first eight minutes and built a 40-26 cushion at halftime.

During the first half, UCLA used a 12-2 scoring run to cut down the early deficit. Adem Bona and Lazar Stefanovic helped to get UCLA's offense in gear with a dunk and 3-pointer, respectively. Mack followed with an and-one opportunity, reducing CSUN's cushion to 18-14.

Stefanovic followed with his second 3-pointer of the game, as CSUN led 20-19.

However, CSUN made another scoring run to close out the first half. The Matadors rattled off a 20-7 stretch, taking a 40-26 lead into the intermission.

The two squads traded baskets to begin the second half, before the Bruins offense came to life with 14 minutes to play. UCLA used a 15-2 scoring run to get within five points, at 53-50. Andrews capped off that scoring run with a 3-pointer with 11:14 remaining. During that run, Mack tallied eight points as part of his team-leading 21 second-half points.

CSUN responded, stretching its lead back to nine points – at 68-59 – before Stefanovic drilled his third 3-point basket to cut down the deficit to 68-62 with nearly six minutes to play their lead back to nine, 68-59, before Stefanovic made his third 3-pointer of the night to cut the deficit to six.

UCLA made it a four-point game, at 71-67, at the 1:41 mark when Andrews sank a 3-pointer. CSUN answered right back at the other end, extending their margin back to six points (73-67). The Bruins were unable to complete the comeback in the final minute.

The Bruins will conclude nonconference play on Friday evening, hosting Maryland at 6 p.m. (PT) in Pauley Pavilion. Friday's game will be nationally televised on ESPN2, with Dave Pasch and Bill Walton calling the action.
