Women’s Basketball Takes Down Oregon State at Home, 62-54

February 10, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Basketball (19-6, 8-5 Pac-12) downed Oregon State (11-13, 3-10 Pac-12) Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins split the season series with the Beavers 1-1 after Friday's win.

Four Bruins reached double-digit scoring in the victory; Gabriela Jaquez led all scorers with 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting, and Charisma Osborne notched her fourth double-double of the season (12 points, 10 rebounds). Kiki Rice and Lina Sontag added 11 points apiece.

UCLA shot a season-low 3-for-27 from three but outscored the Beavers 32-20 in the paint and 22-6 off turnovers in the game. The Bruins outpaced Oregon State in transition, putting in 20 points on fast breaks to the Beaver's two.

The Bruins had 11 steals in the game; Sontag led the way with five swipes of her own.

The first period was a low-scoring affair. Both teams had four made baskets inside the arc and the Bruins added two free throws for a slight advantage through the first.

The Bruins and Beavers had more of an offensive battle in the second with each team putting up 21 points in the quarter.

Osborne and Jaquez both had 8 points in the first half. Osborne's late missed three-point attempt set Brynn Masikewich up to beat the buzzer off her offensive rebound, and the senior put UCLA up two going into the half.

The Beavers opened the second half on a 9-2 run, forcing a timeout from UCLA. The Bruins would answer back, slowly chipping into the Beaver lead. Rice got things going after converting an and-one layup in transition, and the Bruins were back within five.

Jaquez grabbed an offensive board off an early Londynn Jones heave from half court, and the freshman forward put it back in the paint with time expiring to make it a one-possession game. UCLA trailed 44-47 heading into the fourth.

The Bruins locked in on defense in the final period, holding Oregon State to seven points on 2-of-10 shooting in the period. Sontag had six points for the Bruins and grabbed key offensive rebounds that helped put the game out of reach.
