Bruins Down Ducks behind Career Night from Bessoir, 67-57

February 12, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Basketball (20-6, 9-5 Pac-12) downed Oregon (14-11, 5-9 Pac-12) Sunday afternoon in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins complete the weekend sweep of the Oregon schools after taking down Oregon State (Feb. 10) and the Ducks (Feb. 12).

Emily Bessoir led all scorers with a career-high 20 points in the game, and Londynn Jones added 17 points (6-11 FG, 4-4 FT) off the bench. Charisma Osborne was the third Bruin in double digits with 13 points, adding five rebounds and a team-high six assists in the game.

The Bruins dominated on fast break points, scoring 19 in transition while holding Oregon to just three points on the break. UCLA outscored the Ducks 24-2 in bench points, and the Bruins capitalized to outscore Oregon 18-7 off of turnovers.

Three Bruins had six rebounds (Bessoir, Camryn Brown, Kiki Rice) and two Bruins grabbed five boards of their own (Lina Sontag, Osborne) in the win. UCLA narrowly outrebounded the Ducks 40-39 in the game; the Bruins were plus-three, grabbing 15 offensive boards Sunday.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first quarter. Bessoir and Jones combined for 10 of UCLA's 14 points in the quarter.

Osborne scored the first two buckets of the quarter to get things started for the Bruins. The senior shooting guard connected with Jones, who scored six in the quarter, for a midrange jumper.

There were four lead changes through the first half, including nine ties in the first 20 minutes. The Bruins and Ducks were knotted up 28-28 at the break.

The third quarter was all Bessoir. The redshirt-sophomore had eight points (2-2 3FG), two steals and a block without a turnover in the period. The Bruins had 12 points off turnovers in the third; Jones poked the ball away from a driving Duck that led to a Bessoir three, giving UCLA a 35-33 lead halfway into the period.

The Bruins outscored the Ducks 12-5 in the last half of the third quarter. UCLA led 47-40 going into the final period.

The Ducks fought back early and brought the game within one (53-52, 4:32) before UCLA's offense caught up. The Bruins had their best shooting quarter in the fourth, scoring 20 points (.529 FG%, 9-for-17 FG) and shooting over 50 percent in the period.

Rice converted an acrobatic layup around 6-foot-8 Phillipina Kyei of Oregon to give the Bruins a 57-55 lead with just under three minutes to go.

Bessoir nailed a dagger three to put the Bruins up nine with less than thirty seconds left in the game, putting it out of reach as the shot clock turned off.

UP NEXT: at California (Feb. 17)

The Bruins head up to the Bay Area to face California on Friday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. in Berkeley; the game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Bay Area and the Pac-12 Now app with Kevin Danna and Julie Rousseau on the call.
