Jewett Selected to Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List
February 16, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA sophomore right-hander Luke Jewett has been selected to the Division I Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced on Thursday.
Jewett was one of 81 players nationally selected to the watch list. The Stopper of the Year Award, now in its 18th year, is given annually to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.
UCLA was one of just six Pac-12 schools represented on the list, joining Stanford, Oregon State, Oregon, Arizona, and Washington State.
Jewett is coming off a solid debut season in 2022, as he went 3-1 with a 3.68 ERA while leading the Pac-12 in appearances (35). He didn't allow an earned run over his first seven outings as a Bruin, and became the first UCLA freshman to lead the team in pitching appearances since 2017.
The Ladera Ranch, Calif. native is slated to take over the closer's role for UCLA in 2023. Earlier this offseason, he was listed at No. 22 in D1Baseball's preseason positional power rankings for relief pitchers.
The Bruins have had three Stopper of the Year winners since the award's inception in 2005, tied with Texas for the most of any school nationwide. David Berg (2013, 2015) remains the only two-time winner of the award, and Holden Powell took home the honor in 2019.
Jewett and the rest of the Bruins open the 2023 season on Friday, hosting Omaha at 5:00 p.m. PT in the first of a three-game series at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
