No. 4 UCLA Charges Past Stanford to 73-64 Win

February 16, 2023 | Men's Basketball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ย No. 4 UCLA improved its home record to 14-0 after a 73-64 win over Stanford Thursday evening at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins outscored the Cardinal 20-7 over the game's final 7:30.

UCLA's Jaime Jaquez Jr. led all players with 26 points and nine rebounds. He scored 17 points in the second half, at one point scoring 13 consecutive for the Bruins (22-4, 13-2 Pac-12) over a stretch of nearly eight minutes. Junior Jaylen Clark added 16 points and six rebounds.

Michael Jones contributed 15 points off the bench to lead Stanford (11-15, 5-10). Harrison Ingram added 13 points and five assists. Maxime Raynaud posted a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.

The Cardinal used a 7-0 scoring run to take an 11-5 lead at 16:10 before a steal and fast-break slam dunk by Adem Bona temporarily slowed Stanford. A David Singleton 3-pointer at 12:47 cut the lead to one, 15-14, and following a Bona block that contributed to the loss of possession, Bona made a layup to give UCLA the lead, 16-15. But the lead was short-lived, as Michael Jones put the Cardinal back ahead 18-16 with a 3-pointer, kicking off a 9-0 run to go up, 24-16. The Bruins cut the lead to four at the half, 31-27, after a Jaquez Jr. bucket with two seconds remaining.

UCLA blasted out a 10-2 run over a minute and a half to reclaim the lead, 37-33. The Bruins scored eight unanswered points over 38 seconds on an and-one by Dylan Andrews, a 3-pointer by Singleton and a fast-break dunk by Clark to force a Stanford timeout.

UCLA made another quick run with six unanswered to take its largest lead at 43-36, following a Clark 3-pointer, Adem Bona block and Jaquez Jr. three-point play. The Cardinal, however, went on a 12-0 run to move ahead, 50-45, with 11:32 to play. Michael Jones scored seven of the 12 points during the run, including the go-ahead layup to move ahead 47-45 with 12:05 remaining.

A long Tyger Campbell 3-pointer, followed on the next possession by a fast-break dunk by Clark, put UCLA up by one, 58-57. A Will McClendon 3-pointer kicked off a 7-0 Bruin run that extended its lead to eight, 67-59.

UCLA returns to action Saturday, when it welcomes California to Pauley Pavilion. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (PT) and Pac-12 Networks will provide television coverage.
