The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA is coming off a 4-0 week at home, sweeping Omaha over the weekend and downing Pepperdine on Tuesday:
UCLA and Vanderbilt have split the all-time series, 2-2, with all matchups taking place since 2010. The Bruins took the first-ever meeting in the series, on Feb. 26, 2010 at Jackie Robinson Stadium as Gerrit Cole out-dueled Sonny Gray in a 9-2 UCLA win. Vandy answered back with wins in the next two meetings, but UCLA evened the series with a 3-2 win at home on Mar. 6, 2020, just days before the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a premature end to the season. This weekend marks the first meeting between the two teams at Vanderbilt, with each previous meeting occuring at Jackie Robinson Stadium.ย
Last Time Out Against Vandyย ย ย
Then-No. 2 UCLA edged then-No. 5 Vanderbilt, 3-2, on Mar. 6, 2020 at JRS in the most-recent matchup of the two schools. The Bruins got to Kumar Rocker for a single run in the third, then put up two more in the fourth to go ahead 3-0. Vandy answered with a two-spot in the fifth, but starter Zach Pettway and the UCLA bullpen held strong from there, holding the Commodores off the board the rest of the way. JT Schwartz opened the scoring with a double into the left-center gap in the third, scoring Kyle Cuellar from first base. UCLA loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth after Rocker issued two walks and an HBP before being pulled from the game. Garrett Mitchell lofted a fly ball to left to score one run on a sac fly, and another run scored on the same play after the throw from the outfield went into the UCLA dugout. Pettway started the game by retiring 12 consecutive batters, and closer Holden Powell earned a four-out save to lock down the nailbiting win.
Bruins High on the National Leaderboards After Opening Sweepย ย ย
After a dominant showing in the first week of the year, UCLA sits at or near the top of the national leaderboards in a number of team statistics:
UCLA's sophomore duo of shortstop Cody Schrier and weekend starter Alonzo Tredwell each received preseason recognition from national outlets ahead of the new season. Schrier was one of 55 players selected to the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, and was a Third Team Preseason All-America pick by Collegiate Baseball. Tredwell meanwhile garnered Preseason All-America honors from both Collegiate Baseball (Second Team) and the NCBWA (Third Team).ย

The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA is coming off a 4-0 week at home, sweeping Omaha over the weekend and downing Pepperdine on Tuesday:
- The Bruins posted a 16-1 win on Opening Day, going ahead for good with back-to-back crooked numbers starting in the fourth before putting the game on ice with a 10-run eighth inning. Kyle Karros went 3-4 and drove in a pair to lead the Bruins offensively. Jake Brooks drew the Opening Day start, striking out eight over five innings and ceding just one run. Four Bruin relievers chipped in a scoreless inning apiece to close it out.
- UCLA won the series with a 23-0 rout on Saturday. It represented the Bruins' most runs in a shutout in program history. Six separate Bruins had multiple hits in the win, four launched a home run, and five batters finished with at least four RBIs. Ultimately, the offense scored in seven of eight innings. Meanwhile on the mound, Alonzo Tredwell struck out a career-high 10 over six innings in his first-ever collegiate start. Tredwell retired 10 batters in a row between innings 2-5, and held Omaha hitless in five at-bats with runners in scoring position.ย
- The Bruins finished off the sweep with an 8-1 win on Sunday. Jack Holman put UCLA up for good with a two-run homer into The Giff in the second inning, and that proved to be enough as Kelly Austin and six relievers combined to hold the Mavericks to one run on six hits. UCLA put the game away with a three-spot in the seventh followed by a moonshot two-run homer from JonJon Vaughns in the eighth.ย
- With the results, UCLA improved to 13-6 on Opening Day under John Savage and won its opening series for the ninth time in the last 11 years. The Bruins were opening the season at home for the 13th consecutive year.
- UCLA kept it rolling with an 11-2 win over Pepperdine on Tuesday. The Bruins scored seven runs in the first inning to establish control, a rally which was capped off by an opposite-field two-run homer from JonJon Vaughns. UCLA allowed a run in just two of nine defensive innings, answering back to score in the bottom half both times. Seven pitchers saw the mound for UCLA, as Chris Aldrich (six-up, six-down in 2 IP) earned the win and freshman righty Michael Barnett (2 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) looked solid in his first collegiate start.ย
- In The Pollsย ย ย
- UCLA entered the week ranked in every major national poll, checking in as high as No. 10 (Collegiate Baseball) while also appearing at No. 13 (Baseball America, NCBWA) and No. 17 (D1Baseball). The Bruins appeared at No. 15 in the preseason USA TODAY Coaches Poll, which was not updated this week. This weekend's series against No. 5 Vanderbilt represents UCLA's first games against a ranked opponent this season.ย
