Megan Faraimo No-Hits No. 3 Florida in Mercy-Rule Win
February 23, 2023 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. โ Megan Faraimo tossed the seventh no-hitter of her career and second of the season to lead the No. 1 UCLA softball team to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over No. 3 Florida at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Thursday night.
ย
Faraimo's no-hitter marked the first time a Bruin pitcher no-hit a top-3 opponent since March 28, 2003, when Keira Goerl kept No. 2 Stanford out of the hit column. It was Faraimo's first no-no against a ranked opponent.
ย
The Bruins (13-0) now have three top-10 victories through the first three weeks of the season.
ย
Faraimo opened the game by striking out six of the first seven batters she faced. She finished the game with nine strikeouts. The Gators' (10-1) only baserunner was a walk to leadoff the second inning. With this performance, Faraimo boosts her win total to a nation-leading 8-0. She also leads the country with 78 strikeouts.
ย
Faraimo's seven solo no-hitters are tied for fourth most all-time with Debbie Doom (1982-85).
ย
A leadoff triple by the Savannah Pola in the first inning set the tone for UCLA's bats. Freshmen Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery proceeded to hit back-to-back RBI doubles to put the Bruins up 2-0 after one. After her two-RBI performance tonight, Grant now leads all freshmen in the country with 17 runs batted in. Woolery entered the weekend tied for second most amongst freshmen in the country.
ย
In the bottom half of the second, Maya Brady hit her second triple in as many weeks to score two more Bruins. Brady, who went 2-for-3 tonight, is now hitting for a .575 average and 1.100 slugging percentage.
ย
UCLA put up a six spot in the bottom of the fourth inning to put the mercy rule into effect. The Bruins opened the frame with four consecutive base hits, two of which were RBI singles by Brady and Grant.
ย
Two more freshmen made the most of their pinch-hit appearances. Ramsey Suarez and Alexis Ramirez each singled in a run before the fourth inning came to a close.
ย
UCLA continues action at the Mary Nutter tomorrow with two games versus No. 18 Kentucky at 5:30 p.m. (PT) and Iowa at 8 p.m. (PT). The games can be streamed on FloSoftball.
