LOS ANGELESย -- No. 3 UCLA (13-1) posted a pair of 5-0 sweeps on Sunday over ranked teams to concludeย the Battle for Los Angelesย at Mapes Beach. The Bruins opened with a 5-0 sweep of No. 16 Long Beach Stateย (3-8) at 10 a.m. PT and then followed that with a 5-0 sweep of No. 13 Florida Atlanticย (7-5) at 2:00 p.m. PT.
In the first dual against the Beach, the Bruins went 10-1 in sets, recording their ninth 5-0 sweep of the season, while improving to 10-4 all-time against LBSUย with their 10th straight victory in the series.
The Bruins went up 1-0 on court four when senior Rileigh Powers and graduate student Haley Hallgren defeated the Beach'sย Emily Mattoon and Megan Widener on court four, 21-14, 21-10.
UCLA put another point on the board when graduate student Abby Van Winkle and junior Peri Brennan took down LBSU'sย Mari Molina and Christine Deroos, 21-10, 21-16. The Bruin duo improved to 5-0 on the year, all on court two.
Senior Lexy Denaburg and freshman Maggie Boyd teamed up to clinch the dual on court one with a 21-9, 21-19ย win over the Beach's Sydney Stevens and Julie Westby.
Sophomore Sophie Moore and junior Tessa Van Winkleย paired upย to take down Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah, 22-20, 21-15 on court three. The Bruin duo improved to 8-0 on the year, all on court three.
Graduate students Jaden Whitmarsh and Marlie Monserez defeated LBSU's Maggie Walters (former UCLA Bruin) and Natalie Glenn on court five, 21-12, 19-21, 15-10, to complete the 5-0 sweep.
Sophomore Natalie Myszkowskiย paired up with graduate student Kelli Greene-Agnew to defeat Holly Jackson and Haley Carrington, 21-16, 21-7, in exhibition play on court six.
In the second dual against Florida Atlantic, the Bruins went 10-1 in sets, recording their 10th 5-0 sweep of the season, while improving to 6-0 all-time against FAU.
Sophomore Jessie Smithย teamed up with Abby Van Winkle to put the Bruins on the board first with a 21-19, 21-17 win on court two over the Owls' Ashleigh Adams and Julie Honzovicova. The duo improved to 3-2 on the year, all on court two.
Powers and Hallgrenย made it 2-0 withย a come-from-behind win on court four over FAU'sย Courtney Moon and Logan Mignerey, 20-22, 21-19, 16-14. The Bruin duo improved to 13-0 on the year (8-0 on court four and 5-0 on court five). The match was filled with a lot of tense moments as the Bruins trailed 13-10 in the third set. But the undefeated Bruin duo was serving for the match at 15-14 when it appeared the Owls had tied it up at 15-15 after a sideout. But UCLA believed the Owls to have been in the net and the FAU pair made an honor call and admitted they were in the net, giving the Bruins the 16-14 win in the third set in a true display of sportsmanship.
Whitmarsh and Monserezย clinched the dual on court five when they defeated Florida Atlantic's Alivia Orvieto and Kate McLaughlin, 21-11, 21-9.
Boyd and Denaburgย put UCLA up 4-0 with a 21-14, 22-20 win on court one over the Owls' Ellie Austin and Christine Jarman. The duo improved to 11-0 on the year, all on court one.
Brennan and Tessa Van Winkle completed the 5-0 sweep with a win on court three over FAU's Emma Grace Robertson and Jillienne Canagelosi, 21-12, 21-143. The Bruin duo improved to 4-1 on the year, all on court three.
Myszkowskiย again paired up with Greene-Agnew to defeat Kendall Mignerey and Marketa Svozilova, 21-16, 21-10, in exhibition play on court six.
The Bruins return to action next weekend when they travel to Gulf Shores, Ala., to take part in the March to May event (Mar. 17-18). The Bruins will open the five-dual tournament with South Carolina on Friday, Mar. 17, at 10:00 a.m. PT.
