Women's Tennis Defeats No. 4 Ohio State in 4-3 Thriller
March 12, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's tennis team earned a marquee victory Sunday at Los Angeles Tennis Center, defeating No. 4 Ohio State in a 4-3 thriller after late wins by Fangran Tian and Sasha Vagramov.
Vagramov clinched the result seconds after Tian pulled the Bruins (5-3, 1-1 Pac-12) level. Both matches were three-set affairs. UCLA collected the doubles point and retook the lead when Ava Catanzarite prevailed in the day's second completed contest. Shelly Bereznyak, Lucia Marzal and Sydni Ratliff were triumphant for the Buckeyes (8-5, 1-0 Big Ten).
The 10th-ranked doubles tandem of Bruins Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle took five of the first six games against Ratliff and Isabelle Boulais on Court 1. The Buckeyes seized the next three, but Hance and Wagle ultimately prevailed for a 6-4 result. Then, with Ohio State nearing victory on Court 2, Vagramov and Vanessa Ong closed out Kolie Allen and Danielle Willson in another 6-4 decision. Ong and Vagramov have clinched three doubles points this season.
Singles first sets were split. Marzal turned in a 6-1 effort and followed that with a 6-0 showing versus Wagle on Court 5, tying the score. No. 76 Catanzarite put UCLA back in front moments later, though, recording a 6-0, 6-2 performance against Allen on Court 3.
In a matchup of nationally-ranked players on Court 2, No. 28 Ratliff dispatched of No. 95 Hance by a 6-3, 6-2 margin. No. 94 Bereznyak then put Ohio State one point away from the overall win, holding off Anne Christine Lutkemeyer 6-2, 6-4 on Court 6.
On the top court, No. 63 Tian and No. 20 Cantos Siemers traded blows across the first two sets, setting up a third. Tian and Cantos Siemers each held serve out of the gate, but Tian ultimately took control en route to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
As Tian finished, a deuce point stood between Vagramov and the decision-making win. With all eyes on Court 4, Vagramov prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 opposite Boulais and set off a celebration with her teammates.

The Bruins return to action Wednesday, when they visit crosstown rival USC in a makeup match. First serve from David X. Marks Tennis Stadium is set for 5 p.m. PT.
