March 16, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's tennis prevailed in the first crosstown showdown of 2023, beating USC 4-1 in a non-conference match Thursday evening at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. The contest was completed after being postponed three times previously due to rain.
Vanessa Ong was victorious in clinching fashion for the Bruins (6-3), who were coming off a 4-3 triumph over then-No. 4 Ohio State and extended their winning streak to three. Ong also helped earn a win in the night's final doubles match. Bruins Kimmi Hance and Fangran Tian also won on the singles courts. Eryn Cayetano picked up the lone singles victory for USC (7-5).
In a matchup of top-25 teams, No. 10 Hance and Elise Wagle took the first four games en route to a 6-2 victory against No. 24 Naomi Cheong and Snow Han. Now winners of five straight decisions, Hance and Wagle are 6-1 in dual matches and 13-3 overall.
USC answered on Court 2, where No. 34 Cayetano and Madison Sieg held off a comeback attempt by Tian and Ava Catanzarite for a 6-3 wi. That put all eyes on Court 3, where Ong and Sasha Vagramov earned two breaks of serve out of the gate and used them toward a 6-3 deciding victory opposite Emma Charney and Nathalie Rodilosso.
Five singles first sets went the way of UCLA. The top court was first to finish, as No. 4 Sieg was forced to retire. No. 63 Tian was leading 6-3, 1-0 at the time of the retirement.
No. 39 Cayetano cut the Trojans' deficit in half when she completed her 6-2, 6-2 win versus No. 76 Ava Catanzarite on Court 3. No. 95 Hance answered emphatically for the Bruins, handing No. 61 Han a 6-2, 6-3 defeat on Court 2 to make the score 3-1. Hance has four wins this season against nationally-ranked foes in singles play.
Ong was able to keep McKenna Koenig at bay on Court 6, following up her 6-1 first set with a 6-3 second to seal the overall result. Ong is now a winner of four singles matches in a row, with each coming in straight sets.
