Jaquez Jr. on Oscar Robertson Trophy Late Season Watch List

March 02, 2023 | Men's Basketball

INDIANAPOLIS – UCLA senior Jaime Jaquez Jr. has been selected as one of 15 top players to the late season watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is annually awarded to the nation's most outstanding men's college basketball player by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA).

A 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Camarillo, Calif., Jaquez Jr. has led the Bruins in scoring (17.0 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) through the team's first 29 games of the season. He is one of just two players in the Pac-12 to rank among the league's top five leaders in scoring and rebounding (along with Arizona's Azuolas Tubelis). Jaquez Jr. and Tubelis are the only Pac-12 student-athletes on the list of 15 players.

Jaquez Jr. has shot 48.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point distance (26-for-78). He has totaled 72 assists and 55 turnovers and ranks second on the team with 44 steals (averaging 1.5 steals per game).

Jaquez Jr. and the Bruins (25-4, 16-2 Pac-12) clinched the Pac-12 Conference's regular-season title in outright fashion last Sunday afternoon with a 60-56 win at Colorado. UCLA, with a three-game league lead over USC and Arizona, will return to action against Arizona State (20-9, 11-7) this Thursday evening at 6 p.m. (PT). The Bruins will close their regular-season schedule at home against Arizona on Saturday, March 4. Game time between UCLA and Arizona is set for 7 p.m. (PT).

The 2023 Oscar Robertson Trophy will be presented by its namesake at the upcoming NCAA Final Four in Houston. A formal presentation will follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

Since the 1958-59 college basketball season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of Oscar Robertson, a Hall of Fame player at the University of Cincinnati and a two-time recipient of the USBWA's Player of the Year award. This is the nation's oldest such award and the only one named after a former player.
