UCLA Holds Off Arizona in Pac-12 Quarterfinal, 73-59

March 02, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LAS VEGAS – UCLA Women's Basketball (24-8, 13-7 Pac-12) downed the Arizona Wildcats (21-9, 11-8 Pac-12) in the second round of the 2023 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament. The Bruins outlasted Arizona Thursday after dropping their lone single-season matchup against the Wildcats in early February.

Emily Bessoir recorded her first-career double-double, putting up 18 points while grabbing 13 boards in the win. Osborne tied Bessoir for a game-high 18 points in the game, shooting 6-for-7 from the free throw line in the game.

Camryn Brown had a career night, scoring a career-high nine points in the win. Brown was 4-for-5 from the field, and she was credited with six rebounds and four assists. The senior also swatted two shots and had one steal on Thursday.

The Bruins dominated Arizona on the boards, outrebounding the Wildcats 46-27 in the game. UCLA pulled down 10 of their 17 offensive rebounds in the first quarter alone. Gina Conti eight rebounds in the contest.

Osborne had her second-straight game with three steals as the Bruins collected seven swipes from Arizona. Thursday's win is the 20th of the season in which UCLA has stolen the ball seven times or more.

Bessoir started hot for her second-consecutive game, this time going to work inside the three-point arc. The German forward was 4-for-8 in the first period, scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds through 10 minutes.

The Bruins trailed by one after the first, and the second quarter was a back-and-forth affair. There were 10 lead changes before halftime, but the Bruins led 33-31 going into the break.

After returning from the locker room, UCLA went on a quick 7-0 run in the first minute and a half to force an Arizona timeout. Osborne, Bessoir and Conti put in buckets during the run. Osborne's short corner jumper put her at 1,700 career points, just the 13th Bruin to reach the mark in school history.

UCLA led by as much as 16 in the third after Brown converted a full-court, press breaking and-one layup off a heaving pass from Kiki Rice. Rice finished with nine points (7-8 FT) and a team-high seven assists in the game.

The Bruins led 55-43 going into the final frame.

Bessoir and Conti combined for 11 of UCLA's 18 points in the fourth; Rice threw three assists in the period and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe to close the game. Bessoir had five defensive boards in the period to secure her double-double.  The Bruins held on to win by 14.
