SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (27-2) earned its 17th sweep of the season on Friday morning to open the Center of Effort Challenge with a 5-0 win over No. 19 Pepperdine (15-8) at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. The Bruins improved to 13-6 all-time against the Waves with their 10th-straight win in the series.

UCLA sported one new pair today in the win and two other pairs moved to a new court for the first time this season.

Sophomore Sophie Moore and junior Tessa Van Winkle put the Bruins on the board first when they defeated the Waves' Juju Quintero and Aubrey Roberts on court three, 21-16, 21-12.

Then junior Peri Brennan and graduate student Abby Van Winkle improved to 19-1 on the year with a 21-14, 21-14 win on court one over Pepperdine's McKenna Thomas and Kate Clermont to put UCLA up 2-0.

The new Bruin tandem featured the return of senior Devon Newberry as she was paired up with graduate student Jaden Whitmarsh on court five. Newberry has been out since Mar. 5 with an undisclosed injury. The pair clinched the dual win for UCLA with a 21-17, 21-16 win over the Waves' Kristine Briede and Madison Oriskovich.

Graduate student Haley Hallgren and senior Rileigh Powers moved up to court two for the first time this season and defeated Pepperdine's Alexus McLeod and Savannah Standage, 21-16, 21-16. The duo improved to 26-0 on the year (1-0 on court two, 2-0 on court three, 18-0 on court four, and 5-0 on court five).

Graduate student Marlie Monserez and sophomore Jessie Smith improved to 3-0 on the year (2-0 on court five), playing on court four for the first time this year. The Bruin tandem took down Gracey Cambell and Gabriella Perez, 21-11, 16-21, 15-12 to complete the 5-0 sweep.
