No. 3 UCLA Falls on Senior Day to No. 1 USC, 14-9

LOS ANGELESย โ No. 3 UCLA (19-5, 4-2 MPSF) dropped its regular season finale on Senior Day, 14-9, to crosstown rival No. 1 USC (25-1, 6-0ย MPSF) on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
Six different Bruins got into the scoring column, led by graduate student Katrina Drake, who scored her fifth hat trick of the year to pace the Bruin offense. Freshman Anna Pearson was the only other Bruin to score multiple goals against the Trojans, finishing with two scores and four drawn exclusions.
Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering 10 saves to go with two steals while giving up 14 goals to the Trojans. She also had a nice save on a penalty shot in the second quarter.
USC held a slim 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter but stretched it out to 7-3 by halftime. The Bruins posted a draw in the third quarter, 3-3, and trailed 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter. USC won the fourth period, 4-3, to provide the 14-9 final.
The Trojans were led by five goals from Tilly Kearns while Paige Hauschild and Grace Tehaney each hadย a hat trick. Carolyne Stern had four saves for USC, which also had seven field blocks.
The Bruins return to action next week at the 2023 MPSF Championship when they take on Arizona State on Friday, April 28 at 12:45 p.m. PT in the first round at Spartan Recreation Aquatics Center on the campus of San Jose State.
