The Week In Reviewย ย  ย
UCLA is 2-2 over the last week, dropping two of three at USC before recovering for a midweek win at LMU
  • Duce Gourson matched a season-high with four RBIs to lead UCLA to a 9-3 Friday win at Dedeaux Field. The Bruins never trailed, going ahead for good with a four-run second. Gourson had an RBI in each of UCLA's first three run-scoring innings, helping the Bruins to an 8-3 lead by the sixth. Jake Brooks got the win for UCLA after going five innings with two earned runs against. Kelly Austin and Cody Delvecchio shut out the Trojans the rest of the way.ย
  • UCLA was limited to four hits in a 5-1 Saturday loss to USC. Caden Aoki went 6 1/3 strong for the Trojans, allowing just one earned run. Darius Perry threw out a career-high three would-be basestealers in the game. Jack Holman hit a solo homer in the fourth to account for UCLA's one run.ย
  • UCLA ended up on the wrong end of a 6-5 thriller in Sunday's rubber match, as USC walked it off with a single in the ninth. The Bruins fought back from an early 3-0 deficit to take the lead, using a four-spot in the seventh to go ahead 5-3. USC answered with a pair in the bottom half of the seventh, and UCLA stranded multiple runners in both the eighth and ninth before Cole Gabrielson's walk-off knock with two strikes and two outs. Kyle Karros had UCLA's biggest swing of the game, clearing the bases for a three-run double to cap off the seventh-inning rally.
  • JonJon Vaughns (.375 BA), Malakhi Knight (.333 BA), and Kelly Austin (4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER), were the Bruins' top performers against the Trojans
  • Duce Gourson and Kyle Karros hit back-to-back homers in the first and UCLA never looked back in a 7-1 win at LMU on Tuesday. The Bruins added a single run in the third before putting the game away with another three-spot in the fifth, with Darius Perry chipping in RBI hits in both rallies. Six Bruin relievers combined to toss 7 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Nate Leibold was the first man out of the bullpen, and picked up his first-career win after going 2 1/3 scoreless. Caedon Kottinger (1.2 IP, 3 K), Chris Aldrich (1-2-3 eighth), and Cody Delvecchio (1-2-3 ninth) also had standout outings from the 'pen.ย
The All-Time Series Against Stanfordย ย  ย ย ย  ย
UCLA is 155-206 all-time against Cardinal, including a 25-26 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have won four of the last seven head-to-head series against Stanford, including two of the last three sets at Sunken Diamond (2017 and 2019; Stanford took two of three in 2021).ย

Current Bruins Against the Cardinalย ย  ย
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Cardinal include: Ethan Flanagan (2 IP, 0 R, 3 K), Luke Jewett (3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 K), and Kyle Karros (.300 BA).ย

Last Year Against Stanfordย ย  ย
UCLA dropped two of three at home against Stanford a season ago in a Thursday-to-Saturday series (Apr. 14-16, 2022):
  • Game 1 โ€” The Bruins scored once in the bottom of the first, but it was all Stanford the rest of the way as the Cardinal posted a 9-1 series-opening win. Carter Graham and Braden Montgomery each had a three-run homer for Stanford. Jake Brooks was solid for UCLA, fanning nine batters (his second-highest K total of the year) while pitching into the seventh inning.ย
  • Game 2 โ€” UCLA evened the series with a nail-biter 5-4 Friday win on Friday, in a game televised by ESPN2. Michael Curialle (two-run homer) and Jake Palmer (two-run single) helped the Bruins open up a four-run lead, but Stanford slowly chipped away and eventually tied it up in the eighth. The Bruins immediately responded in the bottom half though, with Darius Perry knocking in Curialle with an RBI single for the go-ahead and ultimate game-winning run. Ethan Flanagan pitched out of trouble in the eighth and ninth to pick up the win, while Max Rajcic (7 IP, 10 K) set then-career highs in innings and strikeouts.
  • Game 3 โ€” The Bruins suffered an 11-0 loss in the series finale. Gage Jump (2 ER, 7 K) was solid over a career-high five innings, while Luke Jewett closed the game out by going seven-up, seven-down. Jake Palmer reached base three times to lead UCLA offensively.
In The Pollsย ย  ย
UCLA was unranked in the five major national polls on Monday, a first for the 2023 season. The Bruins did receive votes in the USA TODAY Coaches and NCBWA polls. UCLA had been ranked as high as No. 7 this season.ย

Controlling the Zoneย ย  ย
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-93 walk differential this season (200 drawn, 107 issued), good for eight in the country. UCLA's 107 walks issued are the fourth-fewest in the country.ย

Bruins On the National Leaderboardsย ย  ย
To this point in the season, UCLA ranks near the top nationally in a number of statistics on both sides of the ball:
  • K-BB Ratio โ€” 4th (3.37, 1st in the Pac-12)
  • BB/9 โ€” 5th (2.87, 1st in the Pac-12)

  • K/9 โ€” 48th (9.70, 3rd in the Pac-12)

Digging the Long Ballย ย  ย
UCLA has hit 41 home runs so far this season while allowing just 26. The Bruins are a strong 17-8 when hitting at least one home run. Junior outfielder JonJon Vaughns and sophomore infielder Duce Gourson co-lead the Bruins with eight home runs apiece, while Jack Holman (seven), Cody Schrier (six), and Kyle Karros (five) have also left the yard plenty. UCLA hit a home run in eight consecutive games to start the month of March, and the Bruins' 26 home runs allowed are tied for the fewest in the Pac.

Strong Startersย ย  ย
UCLA's loss on Mar. 31 to WSU was a rarity, as it marked the first time this season the Bruins lost a game in which they scored first (they had gone 12-0 in such games to that point). Overall this year, UCLA is out-scoring its oponents 57-28 in the first two innings of games (30-13 in the first, 27-15 in the second).

Familiar Faces Out of the 'Penย ย  ย
UCLA's Cody Delvecchio enters the week as the national leader in pitching appearances with 27. The freshman righty has allowed a run in just three of those 27 appearances for an anemic 0.75 ERA. Chris Aldrich (22, 18th) and Charles Harrison (19, 86th) also rank highly on the national leaderboards in appearances.

Testing Dariusย ย  ย
UCLA catcher Darius Perry enters the week with by far the most runners caught stealing (16) of any catcher in the Pac-12, six more than runner-up Johnny Tincher (Washington). Perry's 49% runners caught stealing rate (16-33) also leads the Pac, with only two other league backstops above the 40% threshold. Perry has thrown out multiple would-be basestealers in each of UCLA's last three weekend series, including a career-high three in one game alone against USC on Apr. 22.ย

Four is the Magic Numberย ย  ย
So far this season, four has been the magic number for Bruin pitchers in locking down wins. UCLA is 20-2 thus far this year when allowing four earned runs or fewer, compared to a 3-11-1 mark in games allowing five or more.ย
