No. 2 UCLA Sweeps Utah Behind Dominant 11-3 Win

April 30, 2023 | Softball

SALT LAKE CITY โ€“ The No. 2 UCLA softball team closed out its conference schedule with a fifth consecutive sweep after an 11-3 dismantling of No. 23 Utah at Dumke Family Stadium Sunday afternoon.
ย
With the win, the Bruins (47-4, 21-3) stretch their conference winning streak to 17 games which is the longest active streak among all Power 5 programs and the longest by UCLA in a single season since 2002. The Bruins, who have also won 20 games in a row overall, finished the Pac-12 slate with 21 conference wins for its most in a season since 1999. UCLA won NCAA titles in both 2002 and 1999.
ย
In the game today, UCLA trailed the Utes (31-13, 12-9) heading into the fourth inning, 2-1, when the Bruins recorded the first of three three-run frames. USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Finalist Maya Brady stepped to the plate with two outs and two runners on and hit a hot shot to Utah's second baseman who misplayed the ball. Another error by the Utes' right fielder allowed Brady to speed around the bases for a Little League inside-the-park homer to score three runs, both giving the Bruins the lead and providing a two-run cushion for reliever Megan Faraimo.
ย
Faraimo was lights out in her 5.0 innings with six strikeouts and just one earned run. She picked up her NCAA-leading 26th win of the year and improved her strikeout total to 208. Faraimo is now just two wins away from becoming the fourth pitcher in UCLA history to achieve 100 wins in a career.
ย
Anna Vines had a remarkable day on both sides of the ball. In the fifth inning, the Bruins' second baseman grinded out an 11-pitch at-bat resulting in her first extra-base hit of the season with an RBI double to pad the lead, 5-2. Vines turned around in the bottom half with a highlight-reel play to stop the bleeding and prevent a second Utah run from scoring. With one out and a runner on second base, Vines tracked down a blooper in shallow right field by leaping into the air and making a full extension catch.
ย
Vines went to work again in the sixth with an RBI single to first base to score Brady who led off the inning with a rocket past the Utah pitcher's ponytail. UCLA freshman catcher Alexis Ramirez knocked in two more runners on a double down the left field line to bring the Bruins' lead to 8-3. It was Ramirez's first RBI and double in over seven weeks.
ย
This season, Vines is hitting for a .349 average which is the best in her five-year career with a minimum of 10 at-bats. The veteran infielder is hitting for a .408 clip in conference games which is good for third best on the squad.
ย
UCLA's pair of NFCA Freshman of the Year Top 25 Finalists, Megan Grant and Jordan Woolery, teamed up for a double apiece in the seventh. The duo leads the team in that category with 12. Woolery's two-bagger that landed at the base of the center field wall pushed the Bruins out to a 10-3 advantage. The final run of the game came on a high fly ball off the bat of Aaliyah Jordan that the Utes center fielder dropped after running 40-plus feet due to a shift.
ย
Grant scored the first run of the game on a lead-off bomb to right field. It was her second homer to lead off a game this season.
ย
UCLA will play BYU at Gail Miller Field tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. (PT) in Provo, Utah. The game will be available for streaming on BYU.TV.
