SAN JOSE, Calif.ย โ No. 3 UCLA (20-7, 4-2 MPSF) fell to No. 6 California (19-9, 3-3 MPSF) in the third-place game of the 2023 MPSF Women's Water Polo Championship, 12-11,ย on Sunday afternoonย at Spartan Recreationย Aquatics Center on the campus of San Jose State.
A total of eight different Bruins got into the scoring column, paced by the season- and game-high-tying four goals from graduate student Ava Johnson. Johnson scored three of her goals in the final 3:37 of the fourth quarter.
Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering eight saves and one steal,ย whileย giving up 12 goals to the Golden Bears.
The game had six ties and two lead changes, but California had an answer for the Bruins every time they would make a run. In the end, the Bruins' 14 combined turnovers were too much to overcome. California led 2-1 in the first period but UCLA scored three straight goal to jump out to a 4-2 advantage at the 4:59 mark of the second quarter on Johnson's first goal of the game. But the Golden Bears would score four straight goals to take a 6-4 lead into the break. The most damaging goal came at the buzzer just before half when Cecily Turner struck the back of the net.
UCLA outscored California 3-2 in the third quarter (the only quarter the Bruins won) to cut the deficit to 8-7 heading into the final stanza. UCLA tied the game at 8-8 (Drake at 7:36), 10-10 (Johnson at 2:53) and 11-11 (Johnson at 0:47). Claire Rowell scored the game-winning goal with 0:18 to go. Taylor Smith's shot at the buzzer was field blocked by Rozanne Voorvelt and California sealed the win.
The Golden Bears only had four players score, but three of them had hat tricks with Voorvelt and Turner each scoring four goals apiece. Isabel Williams had 13 savesย and one steal while surrendering 11 goals to the Bruins.
The Bruins now await their fate for an at-large selection into the 2023 NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship to be contested on May 12-14 at Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The NCAA Selection Show is slated to stream live on NCAA.com tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
