The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA is 1-2 over the last week, dropping two games at Washington State before rallying for an extra-innings win at Long Beach State on Tuesday:
- Washington State logged a 9-5 win in Friday night's series opener. Bruin relievers retired 12 consecutive Cougars to close the game, but that wasn't enough to overcome a pair of early multi-run rallies from the hosts, who led 9-3 through four. Darius Perry paced the Bruins offensively with a home run and a double. Jake Saum, Cody Delvecchio, and Chris Aldrich teamed up for that 12-up, 12-down spree in the second half of the game.ย
- WSU closed out the series with a 5-1 win on Sunday. Again, UCLA sent down eight batters in a row to close the game but couldn't overcome an early deficit, as the Cougars scored in three consecutive frames starting in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Cody Schrier got UCLA on the board with a solo shot in the sixth.
- The series in Pullman was affected by weather. UCLA-WSU had a scheduled Saturday game postponed, and ultimately not made up, due to snow. The start of Sunday's game was also delayed about 90 minutes due to snow flurries at Bailey-Brayton Field.
- UCLA outlasted Long Beach State for a 4-3 win in 13 innings on Tuesday night at Blair Field. The Bruins were trailing 3-1 and down to their last out in the ninth inning when Duce Gourson took Dalton Ponce deep for a game-tying two-run home run. The teams battled to a deadlock until UCLA manufactured a single run in the 13th โ Darius Perry drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt, and later scored on a sac fly โ to take its first lead of the game. Luke Jewett got the win after a masterful relief effort, closing the game by going a career-long 5 1/3 innings without allowing a run. His stiffest test came in the bottom of the 13th after allowing a leadoff double, but he got the next three batters in a row to strand the game-tying run. As a whole, Bruin relievers closed the game by getting 27 consecutive outs without allowing a run, the equivalent of a full nine-inning game.ย
UCLA entered the week ranked in three of the five major national polls, checking in as high as No. 22 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll) while also appearing at No. 23 (D1Baseball, NCBWA). The Bruins were unranked in the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls. Utah enters the series unranked.

UCLA has won nine of 10 series over Utah since 2012, and has won 15 of the last 16 head-to-head games against the Utes (Utah snapped a 15-game losing streak to UCLA in last year's series finale).
Last Year Against the Utesย ย ย
UCLA took two of three from Utah in Salt Lake City last year (Apr. 8-10), with each game decided by one run:
- Game 1 โ The Bruins rallied for a 6-5 win in 10 innings to open the series. UCLA trailed 5-1 after six, but knotted it up late on a Cody Schrier solo home run, two-run Josh Hahn single, and Daylen Reyes sac fly. The Bruins moved ahead in the tenth after Carson Yates led off with a double and later scored on a wild pitch. Kelly Austin received the win after a standout relief outing. He entered with two on and nobody out with the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, but got out of that inning unscathed before posting a 1-2-3 bottom of the 10th.ย
- Game 2 โ UCLA clinched the series over Utah with a 4-3 Saturday win. Daylen Reyes put the Bruins up for good with a two-run home run in the fourth (his first-career HR). Carson Yates added a two-run single in the next inning to make it 4-1, which turned out to be just enough offense to preserve the lead. Ethan Flanagan wiggled out of jams in the eighth and ninth inning to keep UCLA ahead, picking up his second-career save. Max Rajcic was solid for UCLA, striking out a career-high eight in a six-inning start. Bruin pitchers limited the Utes to a 1-13 line with runners in scoring position. It was technically another comeback, one-run win for UCLA, as Utah opened the scoring with a run in the second.ย
- Game 3 โ The Bruins dropped a back-and-forth series finale on Sunday, 7-6. Both teams led multiple times over the course of the game, but the Utes went ahead for good with a three-spot in the bottom of the seventh. Darius Perry and Jake Palmer had RBI singles as part of a go-ahead four-spot for UCLA in the second inning, while Daylen Reyes sparked a two-spot with a one-out triple in the sixth. Gage Jump made his first-collegiate start in the game, striking out four over 1 2/3 innings.ย
- For the weekend, UCLA edged Utah in batting (.279-.250), runs (16-15), hits (31-26), ERA (5.00-5.14), and strikeouts (31-26).
Active Bruins with strong career numbers against the Utes include Kelly Austin (3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K), Josh Hahn (7-9, 2 HR, 1.154 SLG, 9 RBIs in 4 GP), Darius Perry (3-5, 2 RBIs in 3 GP), Cody Schrier (7-15, HR, 3 XBH in 3 GP) and Carson Yates (5-13, 4 R, 2 RBIs in 3 GP).ย
