Andrew Rowan – have been honored as AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball All-America selections in an announcement on Monday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Champlin, David, McHenry and Rowan were chosen to the AVCA Div. I-II first-team while Knight garnered second-team honors. Genis and Gooch were awarded honorable mention. Rowan was also recognized as the AVCA Newcomer of the Year.
Champlin, a first-team All-MPSF selection, had 13 double-digit kill matches during the regular season and performed as one of the team's top passers. He enters the NCAA Tournament ranked 31
st nationally in service ace average (0.36). Champlin recorded a career-high 19 kills in a win at Pepperdine and tied his career-best with six block assists in a home win over the Waves and at Hawai'i. He was named MPSF Player of the Week twice during the season – after winning the UCSB Tournament and after posting a pair of league wins at GCU. Champlin was also named Off the Block's National Outside Attacker of the Week after leading the Bruins to a series of wins in the UCSB Asics Tournament.
David, who was a first-team All-MPSF pick, leads the Bruins with 19 double-digit kill matches this season, including four 20-kill matches. He ranks 20
th nationally in service ace average (0.42) and has at least one ace in 15 of his last 17 matches this season. David has registered multiple aces in 12 contests this season. He was selected MPSF Player of the Week for his efforts in the Outrigger Invitational when he combined for 42 kills in battles against NCAA Tournament-bound teams from Penn State and Hawai'i.
Knight, a first-team All-MPSF selection, has achieved double-digit kills in 12 matches this season and made 25 starts. One of the team's top passers, he was named Off the Block National Outside Attacker of the Week after hitting over .400 with double-digit kills in each win over USC. Knight recorded a career-best 18.5 points in a win at UC Irvine in which he equaled his career-best with 15 kills. He was chosen Off the Block's National Attacker of the Week after leading the Bruins to a pair of wins over BYU by hitting .708 with 17 kills on 24 attempts. The MPSF honored him as Player of the Week after he hit .476, with 23 kills, in a pair of wins over Long Beach State.
McHenry, the MVP of the MPSF Tournament and a first-team all-league selection, leads the nation in hitting percentage with a .537 attack percentage which ranks among the best ever by a Bruin player. He has hit at least .500 in 19 matches this season. McHenry has totaled at least three blocks in 16 contests in 2023. Three times this season, he was Off the Block's choice as the National Middle Attacker of the Week – he combined for 19 blocks in two wins over Pepperdine; 25 kills in two wins over UC Irvine; led UCLA in matches against Penn State (9 kills, 3 aces, 7 blocks) and Hawai'i (11kills, 5 blocks) at the Outrigger Invitational. He added 17 kills in two wins over Long Beach State.
Rowan, who was named the Freshman of the Year in the MPSF, has helped the Bruins lead the nation in attack percentage this season at .381. He is the first Bruin to win the AVCA Newcomer of the Year since
Brandon Taliaferro, now an assistant coach, was named AVCA Freshman of the Year in 1997. Rowan ranks tied for eighth in the nation in service ace average (0.49) after his 49 aces led all MPSF players this season. He recorded 17 matches with multiple aces and added 17 matches with multiple blocks. Rowan was selected AVCA National Player of the Week after leading UCLA to a pair of wins over Long Beach State, including a home win in which the team hit a season-best .551 percentage.
Genis ranks third in the nation in blocks average per set with a 1.25 mark. He has hit at least .500 in 14 matches this season and recorded a season-best seven kills in both Bruin league wins at GCU. He earned Off the Block's National Middle Attacker of the Week honors after recording eight blocks in each regular-season win at Stanford.
Gooch has started each match this season at libero. Eighteen times this season he has handled at least 15 serves in a match without error. Gooch was selected to the all-tournament squad at the UCSB Asics Invitational. He was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week after recording his season-high of 13 digs in a win at Concordia-Irvine.
