W. Soccer, M. Volleyball Teams to be Honored at White House Monday
June 11, 2023 | Men's Volleyball, Women's Soccer, Bruin Athletics
The NCAA champion UCLA women's soccer and men's volleyball teams will be honored at the White House on Monday, June 12 on College Athlete Day.ย
ย
National Championship programs from Division I, II and III were invited to attend the celebration hosted by President Joe Biden. The event will be broadcast online at whitehouse.gov/live and on the White House Facebook page beginning at 11:30am ET/8:30am PT.
ย
The men's volleyball team returns to the Washington, D.C. area, where they won their record 20th NCAA championship on May 6. The top-seeded Bruins beat two-time defending champion Hawai'i in four sets at EagleBank Arena on the campus of George Mason University to finish the year with a 31-2 record and a 12-match winning streak. The title was the program's first since 2006 and the ninth overall NCAA championship for UCLA head coach John Speraw, who has won four as a head coach, three as a UCLA assistant coach and two as a Bruin player.
ย
Women's soccer won its second NCAA title on Dec. 5 in Cary, N.C., storming back from a 2-0 deficit with 10 minutes to play to stun North Carolina, 3-2 in double overtime. UCLA scored the tying goal with just 16 seconds left in regulation after Reilyn Turner headed in a perfectly-placed Ally Lemos corner kick to send the game into overtime. Maricarmen Reyes scored the championship-winning goal in the 107th minute to secure the biggest comeback in College Cup history. UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa became the first rookie coach in NCAA Division I women's soccer history to win a national championship.ย
ย
UCLA has won a total of 121 NCAA Championships, ranking second all-time amongst all schools. This is the first time either of these two programs has been invited to the White House.
