LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's basketball program has received a signed grant-in-aid from Jan Vide, as announced on Monday by Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Men's Head Basketball Coach.
Vide, a 6-foot-6 guard from Ljubljana, Slovenia, was honored as the MVP of the 2023 Adidas Next Generation Tournament last month in Kaunas, Lithuania. He averaged 19.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game at the Adidas Next Generation Tournament (ANGT). Through eight contests, he shot 52.9 percent from the field and 78.8 percent from the free throw line.
"Jan is a lead guard with great size, standing at 6-foot-6, and he has shown that he can handle the ball and excel in the pick and roll at a very high level," Cronin said. "He's been very well-known and highly regarded on the international basketball scene, having won multiple awards in European competition. Jan brings great toughness and talent to the table. He is a great young man with a tremendous future. He's going to be able to play multiple positions for us. Certainly, he can help us score the ball and can create for others. We are very excited than Jan has chosen to come to Westwood and be a Bruin."
Vide totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists in his team's championship win in the Adidas Next Generation Tournament in May, before securing MVP honors.
Last year, Vide registered averages of 20.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for Slovenia at the 2022 U17 FIBA World Cup (in Malaga, Spain). Two years ago, he competed at the 2021 FIBA U16 Challengers event and averaged 27.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. Slovenia registered a 4-1 overall record at the FIBA U16 Challengers competition.
Vide will join an incoming class that includes four other freshmen and one junior. The Bruins signed Devin Williams from Lake Elsinore, Calif., Brandon Williams (no relation) from New York, and Sebastian Mack from Las Vegas during the early signing period in Nov. 2022. Earlier in the spring, UCLA added incoming transfer Lazar Stefanovic, a rising junior who was previously at the University of Utah, and incoming freshman Ilane Fibleuil from France.
