UCLA's Varney Invited to USRowing Selection Camp
June 27, 2023 | Women's Rowing
Rising senior Rosemary Varney of the UCLA women's rowing program has been invited to attend USRowing's Under 23 National Team selection camp this summer.
Varney, from Ojai, Calif., is among 10 rowers who have been selected to the women's sculling selection camp. Athletes who are selected through these camps will represent Team USA at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships from July 19-23 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The U23 women's sculling selection camp is taking place at the Oklahoma City High Performance Center, under the direction of OKCHP head coach and high performance director Reilly Dampeer. The camp will select the women's quadruple sculls crew that will represent the United States in Bulgaria. Selection camps began earlier this month and are expected to run through July 7.
Varney primarily stroked UCLA's second varsity eight crew (2V8+) during the 2023 spring season. She stroked the varsity eight crew (V8+) in the team's season-opening dual-meet competition against USC, before stroking the 2V8+ crew in UCLA's final four spring events.
Varney becomes the second UCLA rower selected to the USRowing Under 23 National team selection camp in as many years. Last summer, Ellen Ulitsky was named to the USRowing Under 23 National Team, prior to her senior season with the Bruins' rowing program. Ulitsky finished in sixth place in the world in the quadruple sculls at the Under 23 event.
