Trio of Bruins Selected on Final Day of 2023 MLB Draft

Junior right-handed pitcher Jake Brooks, senior catcher Darius Perry, and sophomore left-handed pitcher Ethan Flanagan were all selected Tuesday on the final day of the 2023 MLB Draft, bringing UCLA's three-day total to six draftees.
Brooks was the first Bruin picked on Tuesday, going in the 11th round (No. 323ย overall) to the Miami Marlins. Perry followed after getting picked by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round (No. 442 overall) and Flanagan capped UCLA's selections after being selected in the 17th round (No. 506 overall) by the Chicago Cubs.
That trio joined three other Bruins who were selected earlier in the draft. Sophomore right-hander Alonzo Tredwell was a day one selection of Houston (second round), while Kyle Karros (fifth round, Colorado) and Darius Perry (seventh round, St. Louis) were both drafted on Monday.
After this year, UCLA has now had 126 student-athletes selected in the MLB Draft in 19 years under head coach John Savage. That figure includes 50 players selected inside the top-10 rounds.
Brooks was a three-year mainstay on the UCLA pitching staff, serving as the Bruins' Friday night starter in both 2022 and 2023. For his career, he went 13-10 with a 4.96 ERA and 152 strikeouts over 158 innings. He was named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List in 2022 as a sophomore after posting a 2.12 ERA over his first seven starts of that campaign. He ended that season with a career-best 3.96 ERA.
Perry was drafted by Colorado for the second time in his career, as the Rockies also picked him in the 39th round out of high school. A four-year letterwinner at UCLA, Perry earned All-Pac-12 honors as the Bruins' starting catcher in both 2022 and 2023. He finished his career with a .278/.385/.361 slash line. The Whittier, Calif. native was one of nine players โ and the only catcher โ selected to the 2023 Pac-12 All-Defensive Team after leading the conference by a solid margin with a 42% runners caught stealing percentage.
Flanagan was a two-year standout in a variety of roles for UCLA. The Irvine, Calif. native earned Freshman All-America and All-Pac-12 accolades in 2022 after going 3-0 with a 3.28 ERA and 76 strikeouts over 60 1/3 innings in a swingman role for the Bruins. He moved to the weekend rotation this past season as a sophomore, going 2-1 and striking out just under a batter per inning. For his career, he went 5-1 with a 3.91 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 92 innings.
