Three UCLA Alumnae to Compete at FIFA Women's World Cup

July 17, 2023 | Women's Soccer

A trio of Bruin alumnae will compete with their respective national teams at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, which takes place July 20-Aug. 20 in Australia and New Zealand. Goalkeeper Teagan Micah (2016-19) will represent host Australia in her second World Cup. Jessie Fleming (2016-19) will be making her third appearance for Canada. Ashley Sanchez (2017-19) will make her World Cup debut for the United States.

Micah was a four-year starter for a Bruin squad that played in two College Cups. She ranks in the Top 3 at UCLA for career saves (2nd, 248), shutouts (3rd, 36) and wins (3rd, 61). In 2017, she led the nation in goalkeeper minutes played with 2,268 and helped UCLA advance to the NCAA Championship game by making a save in a penalty kick shootout in the semifinals. Micah was named to Australia's 2019 World Cup team and earned her first national team cap on June 15, 2021 prior to the Olympic Games, where she contributed a clean sheet against the U.S. in group play and saved a penalty kick in the quarterfinals to help the Matildas beat England.ย

Fleming earned three All-America honors at UCLA and was a two-time MAC Hermann Trophy and Honda Award finalist. She totaled 25 goals, 12 assists and 72 points in her career at UCLA. As a freshman, she led UCLA in scoring with 11 goals and 27 points and was selected the Top Drawer Soccer Freshman of the Year. Fleming played for Canada in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups and led Canada to Olympic gold in 2021 after helping the team win bronze at the 2016 Olympics. The second-youngest player to debut for Canada at 15 years old, Fleming has 155 international appearances with 101 starts, 19 goals and six assists.ย

UCLA's all-time assists leader with 42, Sanchez was a first-team All-American in 2018 after leading the Bruins with 10 goals, 15 assists and 35 points. She set or tied five school records that season, including single-season assists and single-game assists (four). Sanchez made her debut with the U.S. National Team on Nov. 27, 2021 and has made 25 appearances with three goals and four assists. She played in the 2016 Under-20 and Under-17 World Cups, as well as the 2018 Under-20 World Cup.

The FIFA Women's World Cup begins on July 20 with a match between co-host New Zealand and Norway, followed by Australia vs. Ireland and Canada vs. Nigeria. The U.S. begins play on July 21 against Vietnam.ย
