UCLA Athletics 2022-23 Year in Review

UCLA enjoyed another banner season in 2022-23, capturing NCAA Championships in women's soccer and men's volleyball to increase its overall total to 121, second-most in the NCAA. Bruin teams also captured five regular season conference titles (men's basketball, gymnastics, men's volleyball, beach volleyball and softball) and an additional two conference tournament championships (men's volleyball and beach volleyball). UCLA was the only school in the nation in 2022-23 to win multiple NCAA team titles, advance to the Sweet 16 in both men's and women's basketball, and finish in the Top 25 and play in a bowl game in football.

Many Bruin student-athletes achieved tremendous individual success. Gymnast Jordan Chiles won two NCAA individual titles, and women's tennis freshman Fangran Tian captured the NCAA singles title. Soccer player Lilly Reale won the Honda Sport Award. Two Bruins earned conference player of the year awards โ€“ men's basketball's Jaime Jaquez Jr. and softball's Megan Faraimo โ€“ and Chiles was recognized as the West Region Gymnast of the Year. And the future looks bright, with six rookies winning conference Freshman of the Year honors โ€“ Tian; Maggie Boyd, Beach Volleyball; Selena Harris, Gymnastics; Jordan Woolery, Softball; Eden Cheng, Diving; and Andrew Rowan, Men's Volleyball.

UCLA coaches were similarly awarded for their teams' successes. Women's soccer's first-year head coach Margueritte Aozasa and men's volleyball head coach John Speraw each earned national coach of the year honors. Gymnastics first-year head coach Janelle McDonald and her staff were named the national coaching staff of the year by College Gym News and were selected by their peers as the West Region Head Coach and Assistant Coaches of the Year. A total of four UCLA coaches earned conference coach of the year honors โ€“ Aozasa; Speraw; Mick Cronin, men's basketball; Stein Metzger, beach volleyball; and Kelly Inouye-Perez, softball.

The Bruins got off to a hot start in 2023, posting a 16-3 record out of the gate and rising as high as No. 7 in the national rankings. With a myriad of injuries piling up over the course of the year, the Bruins finished at 28-24-1. The versatile Kelly Austin earned All-America honors to pace the Bruins' pitching staff, while Duce Gourson earned an invite to the Team USA Collegiate National Team Training Camp after leading UCLA's offense with a .319/.438/.515 slash line.

UCLA concluded its 2022-23 campaign with its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament's Final Four, posting a 31-6 overall record. Under the direction of four-year head coach Mick Cronin, the earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament after having won the Pac-12 Conference's regular-season title for the first time since 2013. The Bruins went 18-2 in league play, securing the league's regular-season crown by four games over Arizona and USC. Senior Jaime Jaquez Jr. was honored as the Pac-12 Player of the Year before securing consensus second-team All-America honors. Jaquez Jr. and senior Tyger Campbell were named as first-team All-Pac-12 selections. Junior Jaylen Clark was recognized as the Naismith Men's Defensive Player of the Year and the NABC Defensive Player of the Year. Clark was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, the Bruins' first such selection since Russell Westbrook in 2008. UCLA went 17-0 at home, marking the program's first undefeated home record since 2006-07. The Bruins will enter next season with a nation-leading 25-game home winning streak.

UCLA Women's Basketball began its season the right way, running up a 13-1 record before New Year's Day. The Bruins captured the 2022 Battle 4 Atlantis championship in an overtime thriller over Marquette; UCLA won three games over the course of three days to earn the title in the Bahamas. The Bruins saw ups and downs during conference play, but they put it together during the Conference Tournament. UCLA took down No. 1-seeded Stanford in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinal, punching a ticket to the title game as the No. 5 seed. Charisma Osborne continued UCLA's postseason hot streak by breaking the program's postseason single-game scoring record. The senior put up 36 points against No. 5-seed Oklahoma in the second round of March Madness. The Bruins returned to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the 2018-19 season before falling to No. 1-seed South Carolina.

The Bruins won their third Pac-12 Championship in program history and just missed winning their third NCAA title, falling 3-2 in the final. UCLA tied its own NCAA, Pac-12 and school record for wins in a season, going 40-4 on the year, with all four losses coming in a narrow 3-2 decision. The Bruins' success brought several awards, as head coach Stein Metzger was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the third time. Maggie Boyd was voted the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year after she went 27-6 on the year. She joined Peri Brennan (34-5), Lexy Denaburg (32-7), and Abby Van Winkle (35-7) as first-team All-Pac-12 honorees. The quartet of Bruins also earned AVCA All-America honors, with Boyd and Denaburg landing on the first team and Brennan and Van Winkle on the second. Brennan and Van Winkle also earned AVCA Top Flight honors on court two, and Haley Hallgren (32-4) and Rileigh Powers (31-4) did the same on court four. Van Winkle, who became UCLA's all-time leader in career wins (128-34), also was named the 2023 Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Scholar Athlete of the Year and was named an Academic All-American.

After cruising to a win in its dual meet with UC San Diego, UCLA men's cross country carried its momentum to finish third overall at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in late September. At the University of Oregon-hosted meet, the Bruins saw three top 10 finishers on the 8000m course - Peter Herold (5th, 23:49.8), Ronan McMahon-Staggs (8th, 23:54.5), and Michael Mireles (9th, 23:54.9). The men's squad would go on to finish fifth at the Pac-12 Championships and 10th in the west region.ย

UCLA women's cross country opened the season with a commanding victory in Mammoth, Calif., taking down UC San Diego in a dual meet between the teams. The women's squad went on to capture a team third-place finish at the Highlander Invite hosted by UC Riverside on October 15. Paced by senior Emma Tavella, the team finished eighth at the Pac-12 championships in late October. Tavella was UCLA's top finisher in each of the five races she ran during her final campaign with the Bruins.

UCLA won its first six games en route to a berth in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl and season-ending ranking of No. 21 in the AP Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Poll. At the helm of the Bruins' record-setting offense โ€“ which piled up a school-record 6,547 yards of total offense โ€“ was quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who shattered seven program career records. Zach Charbonnet, meanwhile, led the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game (135.9) and the nation all-purpose yards per game (168.0). He was selected to the FWAA All-America first team as an all-purpose player and made the All-Conference first team alongside teammate Laiatu Latu.

First-year head coach Armen Kirakossian led the Bruins to three top 5 team finishes in his first year at the helm of the program. The season was highlighted by t-5th mark at the highly competitive Southwestern Invitational where two Bruins - Pablo Ereño and Omar Morales - finished in the top 20. Morales was the most impressive individual performer in Kirakossian's debut season. After finishing 89th in his first event of the season, Morales improved each tournament, culminating in the first medal of his collegiate career at the El Macero Classic. Ten days later, Morales competed in his first PGA TOUR event at the Mexico Open. On June 5, Morales qualified for the 123rd U.S. Open after winning his qualifying round at Hillcrest Country Club.

The UCLA women's golf team finished top 3 in six events in 2022-23, highlighted by two wins in the inaugural Battle for the Bell match play event versus USC and at The Match in the Desert. Head coach Carrie Forsyth announced her retirement after 24 years leading the Bruins' program which included two NCAA Championships. Forsyth, who turned UCLA into a perennial national power, became the third member of the program to be inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. The Bruins were led by consensus First Team All-American (WGCA & Golfweek) Zoe Antoinette Campos who posted the first two wins of her collegiate career at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic and Silverado Showdown. Campos and Caroline Canales were both named to the All-Pac-12 First Team.

UCLA returned to the national stage under first-year head coach Janelle McDonald, qualifying to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2019 and finishing fifth overall, with the Bruins' third-place semifinal total of 197.9125 ranking as the highest non-advancing score in NCAA history. Sophomore Jordan Chiles won a pair of NCAA titles, capturing the uneven bars crown with a perfect 10 and winning the floor exercise title with a score of 9.9875. She also won Pac-12 titles on those two events and earned a total of eight All-America honors on the year. As a team, the Pac-12 regular season co-champion Bruins hit 332 of 336 routines for 9.5 or higher, for a hit rate of 98.81% that stands as the highest in the nation over the last 15 years. UCLA scored 197 or higher in all but one meet and had three scores of 198 or higher, including a high of 198.275 at the NCAA Regional Second Round.

UCLA registered multiple first-place finishes at the Big Ten Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., before closing the month of April with a strong showing at the Dexter Lake Invitational in Lowell, Ore. With four crews racing at the two-day Big Ten Invitational on the first weekend of April, UCLA logged first-place finishes in each of four races on day one. The Bruins' two varsity four crews had a pair of top-two finishes on the second day of the Big Ten Invitational. After a dual-meet sweep of local competitor Loyola Marymount, had four top-two finishes in eight races at the Dexter Lake Invitational in Oregon. UCLA closed the season at the Pac-12 Championships in Lowell, Ore., where the Bruins' third varsity eight registered a fourth-place finish in a seven-boat heat. Senior Olivia Caesar was honored as an All-Pac-12 Conference selection for the third consecutive season.

UCLA had its strongest season yet under fourth-year head coach Ryan Jorden, reaching the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time since 2014. With a 12-7-1 record, the Bruins hit the double-digit win mark in back-to-back seasons for the first time in nearly 10 years. Six Bruins were named to the All-Pac-12 Team, and junior left back Tommy Silva, the team's assist leader with eight, was a first-team Academic All-American with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

UCLA had a dream season under first-year head coach Margueritte Aozasa, winning a school record-tying 22 games and capturing its second NCAA title after an unprecedented comeback in the championship game over North Carolina. Down 2-0 with 10 minutes to play, UCLA scored two goals, including the tying goal with 16 seconds to play, to send the game into overtime. Maricarmen Reyes provided the heorics in overtime, scoring the game-winner in the 107th minute. The Bruins started strong from the jump, winning their first 13 games of the season, including victories at No. 2 Duke and No. 1 North Carolina. Sunshine Fontes led the team in scoring with 30 points (11 goals, 8 assists), and the Bruin defense, led by goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy's 0.56 goals against average, totaled shutouts. Sophomore Lilly Reale won the Honda Sport Award and was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Aozasa became the first rookie head coach to win a Division I women's soccer championship and led a coaching staff that was named the National Staff of the Year while also earning Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. ย

The Bruins finished the year with another 50-win campaign in 2023, ending the season with a 52-7 (.881) overall record and a 21-3 mark in conference play to secure UCLA's 17th regular-season conference title in program history. With their fifth consecutive conference sweep against Utah, the Bruins concluded their Pac-12 schedule with 21 wins for their most in a season since 1999. In total, UCLA defeated 20 ranked opponents in 2023. Maya Brady was one of the top players in the country, being named a top 3 finalist for USA Softball's Collegiate Player of the Year which is considered the most prestigious award in the sport. Brady was also named the 18th Pac-12 Player of the Year in program history. With her team-leading .448 batting average, 18 home runs and 59 runs batted in, Brady's impressive season also garnered her First Team All-American honors. Also headlining the Bruins' All-American selections was back-to-back Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Megan Faraimo who joined Brady on the All-America First Team. Brady finished her outstanding collegiate career as a three-time All-American and third on both of UCLA's wins list (101) and strikeouts list (1000). The UCLA ace also continued our longstanding tradition with the Honda Sport Award, being named as one of four finalists for the prestigious honor.

The 2022-23 season was another successful one for the Bruins. UCLA opened the year by winning six consecutive dual meets and then hit another gear once championship season started, earning the program's most individual NCAA qualifiers (seven) since 2016 and the most All-Americans (five) since 2017. Eden Cheng took home Pac-12 Freshman Diver of the Year honors after triple-qualifying for NCAAs and setting a UCLA school record in platform diving. That was one of five school records set during the campaign, with Claire Grover (100 breast) and Paige MacEachern (400 IM) joining Cheng in setting new individual school standards.

Without top-court fixture Alexander Hoogmartens for much of the season, the Bruins still earned a spot in the NCAA Championships team tournament thanks in large part to standout freshmen Gianluca Ballotta, Aadarsh Tripathi and Azuma Visaya. UCLA won three of its four 4-3 results, with Visaya clinching two of them and Ballotta sealing the third. Tripathi led all Bruins in total wins. Veterans Giacomo Revelli and Patrick Zahraj made the All-Pac-12 Second Team after playing on the top two singles courts for much of the dual-match season.

Thanks in part to ITA All-America honorees Kimmi Hance, Fangran Tian and Elise Wagle, the Bruins earned a spot in the NCAA Championships super-regional round after shocking No. 6 overall seed Duke in a 4-3 thriller on its home court. UCLA also experienced individual success, with freshman Tian reaching the pinnacle as the NCAA Division I singles champion in the weeks after. The Beijing native beat six top-60 opponents without dropping a set, joining UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer Keri Phebus (1995) as the only Bruins to hoist the trophy. Head coach Stella Sampras Webster also achieved a milestone, as UCLA's 5-2 regular-season victory marked the 500th of her 27-year career.

UCLA men's track and field was on a mission during the indoor season, setting five new indoor school records during the 2022-23 campaign. Michael Pinckney opened his freshman season with a new indoor school record of 72-04.25 in the hammer throw at the Armory, becoming the first Bruin to throw over 72 meters in indoor competition. Myles Misener-Daley broke the indoor 200m record (20.68) at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invite, becoming just the third Bruin to break the 21-second mark in the event. At the Arkansas Qualifier, Ronan McMahon-Staggs ran UCLA's fastest indoor mile time with a mark of 3:54.93. The junior ran three consecutive races under the 3:58 mark during a red-hot indoor season. Ismail Turner set two indoor school records at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, running a 45.94 in the 400m dash and anchoring the record-breaking 4x400m relay team. UCLA finished the indoor season with five first-team All-Americans, five second-team All-Americans and four All-America Honorable Mentions.

Women's track and field competed in nine meets during the indoor campaign, taking home a first-place team finish at the Dr. Sander Invite in late January in the squad's lone team competition of the season. UCLA's distance medley relay ran a 10:54.49 at the David Hemery Valentine Invite on Feb. 10, earning the second-fastest mark in the country and UCLA's new school record. Gwyn George, Kate Jendrezak, Rose Pittman and Mia Barnett were named Indoor first-team All-Americans for their fourth-place finish in the DMR at indoor nationals. The Bruins finished the indoor season with five first-team All-Americans and four second-team All-Americans.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field

The Bruin men appeared in 12 track and field meets during the outdoor campaign. UCLA earned fourth place as a team at the Jim Click Shootout and reclaimed victory over USC at their annual Dual Meet, defending Drake Stadium in an 88-70 win over the Trojans. The 4x400m relay team shined during the 2023 outdoor season. The relay lineup of Antonie Nortje, Willington Wright, Ismail Turner and Cameron Reynolds ran a 2:59.25 at the Texas Relays to set a new outdoor school record; the record had been untouched since 1988. The relay team of Nortje, Wright, Myles Misener-Daley and Reynolds went on to place third at the NCAA DI Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in June. UCLA finished the season with four first-team All-Americans, two second-team All-Americans, and five student-athletes earning All-America Honorable Mention.ย

In her first meet with the Bruins, Federica Botter set the new all-time record in the outdoor javelin throw. The Italian thrower broke the school record three more times during the outdoor season and earned first-team All-America honors at the National Championships in June. The Bruin team put the pieces together at the Pac-12 Championships, combining scores from sprinters, distance runners and throwers to earn a fifth-place team finish. Emma Tavella broke her own 3000m steeplechase school record at the NCAA West Prelims, recording UCLA's first-ever sub-10-minute finish in the race. Tavella would go on to finish 14th in the nation at the NCAA outdoor national championships. UCLA finished the outdoor season with five first-team All-Americans, nine second-team All-Americans and six All-America Honorable Mentions.ย

The UCLA men's volleyball team won the 2023 national championship in four sets over two-time defending champion Hawai'i. The victory brought home NCAA men's volleyball championship No. 20 for the program, and first since the 2006 season. UCLA finished the season with a record of 31-2, totaling the most wins since the 1995 team went 31-1. The Bruins ended the season with 12-straight victories to mark the longest streak by the program since the 2006 National Champs won the final 14 contests on the way to the title. UCLA Head Coach John Speraw secured his fourth NCAA men's volleyball title as a collegiate head coach and his ninth overall as a coach and player. Speraw was named the 2023 AVCA National Coach of the Year, as well as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Coach of the Year after guiding the program to its first MPSF tournament title since 2006. Middle blocker Merrick McHenry, who led the nation in attack percentage, was named MVP of the MPSF Tournament and went on to be selected as the winner of the Ryan Millar Award as the nation's top middle attacker. A program high seven players were recognized with All-America honors, including four first-team selections โ€“ McHenry, Andrew Rowan, Ethan Champlin and Ido David. Rowan was also chosen as the AVCA Newcomer of the Year and the MPSF Freshman of the Year after setting UCLA to the nation's best team hitting percentage.

The UCLA women's volleyball team concluded the 2022 season with a 16-13 record (.552), including a 10-10 mark in conference play. The year was highlighted by wins over Hawai'i, Utah and Washington State. Five Bruins received conference accolades, headlined by Anna Dodson, who was named to the All-Pac-12 Team and Grayce Olson who was selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team. Three UCLA outside hitters, élan McCall, Charitie Luper and Iman Ndiaye, earned honorable mention acclaim. Dodson was a two-way force at the net, leading UCLA with 77 blocks and a .330 hitting percentage. She also ranked second on the team with 2.54 kills per set. McCall, who led UCLA with 312 kills, reached 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs in the same match versus Colorado Oct. 2.ย

The UCLA Bruins made their 37th appearance in the NCAA Championship in 2022, finishing with a 22-5 record. Four of the five losses on the year were by just one goal. UCLA had a league-best eight players earn 2022 Delfina All-MPSF West accolades, highlighted by super senior attacker Jake Cavano, senior attacker Tommy Gruwell, and senior goalkeeper Bernardo Maurizi, who were all named first-team All-MPSF. Redshirt sophomore attacker Gianpiero Di Martire, sophomore attacker Chase Dodd, and junior attacker Jack Larsen, were all named to the second team. Super senior utility Evan Rosenfeld and junior attacker Makoto Kenney both garnered honorable mention plaudits. Cavano was the lone Bruin to earn first-team All-America honors while Maurizi, Di Martire, and Gruwell each earned second-team accolades. Dodd earned honorable mention All-America honors for the first time in his career.

UCLA made its 21st appearance in the NCAA Championship and 27th overall Championship appearance in 2023, finishing with a 21-8 overall record. The Bruins also went 4-2 in the MPSF during the regular season, finishing fourth at the MPSF Championship. Graduate center Ava Johnson headlined the list of Bruin All-America selections as UCLA's lone first-team honoree. Graduate utility Katrina Drake was the only Bruin to earn second-team honors. Three Bruins earned honorable mention All-America accolades, which included sophomore attacker Emma Lineback (52 goals), freshman utility Anna Pearson (46 goals), and freshman utility Sienna Green (39 goals). The three young student-athletes were the Bruins' top three scorers on the season.
