Tredwell Selected by Houston on Day One of 2023 MLB Draft

UCLA sophomore right-handed pitcher Alonzo Tredwell was selected in the second round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros on Sunday evening.
Tredwell becomes the 121st Bruin to be picked in the MLB Draft in 19 years under head coach John Savage. The Coto de Caza, Calif. native was the No. 61 overall selection in the draft.
The 6-foot-8 righty is coming off two standout seasons in Westwood. He was a consensus Freshman All-American as UCLA's closer in 2022 before making the move to the weekend rotation this past season. For his career, he's gone 8-3 with six saves, a 2.83 ERA, .228 batting average against, and 113 strikeouts in 92 1/3 innings.
Tredwell burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2022, winning the closer role and finishing the season with a 2.11 ERA and .195 BAA over 47 innings. His 10.3 strikeout-to-walk ratio (62-6) would have been good for fourth in the country if he had enough innings to qualify. After the season, Tredwell earned All-Pac-12 honors and was a consensus First Team Freshman All-American.
He was off to a solid start to the 2023 season โ posting a 3.57 ERA over nine starts โ but didn't appear after Apr. 22 due to injury. His first two outings of the year were his best, as he struck out a career-high 10 over six shutout innings against Omaha on Feb. 18 before limiting Vanderbilt to two hits over five shutout frames on Feb. 25.
Tredwell is UCLA's highest-drafted pitcher since Ryan Garcia went in the second round to Texas in 2019.
The 2023 MLB Draft continues on Monday at 11:00 a.m. PT with rounds 3-10. The draft concludes on Tuesday with rounds 11-20.
