Bruins Wrap USATF Outdoor Nationals and U20 Meets in Oregon

Eugene, Ore. โ UCLA track & field wraps its weekend in Oregon after five Bruins competed at Hayward Field. The 2023 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships and the 2023 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships were hosted in Eugene by the University of Oregon from July 6-9.

2023 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships (July 7-9)

Michael Pinckney headlined the action for UCLA at the U20 meet. The rising sophomore threw in three events throughout the course of the weekend: hammer throw, shot put and discus. On Friday evening, the thrower launched for a mark of 67.03m (219-11) on his first attempt in the hammer throw, and it would ultimately earn him a gold medal at the national championship. He is the first Bruin since Otito Ogbonnia to earn a gold medal at a U20 meet; Ogbonnia was the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships shot put champion.

Pinckney went on to earn national runner up in the shot put event Saturday, connecting for a throw of 19.21m (63-00.25) on his final attempt in the event. He secured a sixth-place finish in the discus throw later that afternoon

Hunter O'Brien also competed for UCLA at the national U20 meet in the pole vault event. O'Brien cleared 5.00m (16-04.75) to place eighth in the nation.

Willington Wright started the action for the Bruins in the first round of the men's 400m race on Thursday, July 6. Wright qualified out of his heat, running a 45.44 in the opening round of the event. The sprinter went on to run a 46.34 during Friday's semifinal, placing 12th in the nation.

Peter Herold was in the men's 3000m steeplechase on Friday evening, running in heat one of the event. Herold crossed in 8:47.67 to place 20th in the nation.

Mayyi Mahama finished things off for the Bruins on Sunday, July 9, in the women's hammer throw. Mahama recorded a mark of 63.39m (207-11) to place fifteenth in the event.
