Bruins Battle at LSU for Reft’s First Win as Head Coach

BATON ROUGE, La. – A night after coming up short in five sets, the UCLA women's volleyball team delivered with a 3-2 victory over LSU in the Maravich Center Saturday evening to earn Alfee Reft's first win as head coach.
Set scores were 12-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-6.
Sophomore Cheridyn Leverette recorded a career-high 17 kills at a .351 hitting percentage and 20.0 points to lead the Bruins (1-1). Audrey Pak, who subbed in at setter in the second set, finished the match with 34 assists and four massive block assists down the stretch. Joining Pak with four blocks each was Desiree Becker, Anna Dodson and Iman Ndiaye.
After recording just six kills and five attacking errors in the first, UCLA went on to hit .250 or better in the remaining four sets. The Bruins trailed 8-4 early in the second. An ace by Peyton Dueck punctuated a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to 11-10. It was Leverette who helped UCLA gain separation with six kills in the frame. The Bruins totaled a match-high 17 kills in set two, including three apiece from Dodson, Ndiaye and Olson.
Carly Hendrickson sparked the Bruins in set four with an ace that pushed UCLA to an 8-3 lead. The Tigers (1-1) answered back, taking a slim 22-21 advantage thanks to outside hitter Sanaa Dotson who racked up six kills in the set. A kill by Anna Dodson evened the score and then an emphatic block assist by Dodson and Pak gave the Bruins the energy they needed to force a fifth for the second night in a row.
UCLA was flawless in set five with seven kills and no attack errors for a .538 hitting percentage. Another block by Pak and Dodson continued the momentum, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead. Pak then teamed up with Becker for a block to force an LSU timeout at the 6-3 mark. Two straight kills by Leverette brought UCLA to 8-4 and the two squads switched sides.
Leverette's stellar night continued at the service line with a 4-0 run featuring two aces to seal LSU's fate. Olson slammed home the match-winning point.
UCLA travels north on Interstate 49 tomorrow morning to prepare for Monday's match at Northwestern State at 10:30 a.m. (PT) in Natchitoches, La. Fans can watch the contest on ESPN+.
