Moore Named to Freshman of the Year Watch List

UCLA quarterback Dante Moore was selected to the watch list for the sixth annual Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award in an announcement made on Wednesday by The Maxwell Football Club. The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award is presented to the outstanding freshman player in college football and recognizes the exceptional performance and impact made by players on their respective teams throughout the season. The winning formula evaluates players based on talent, character, ambassador and legend.ย The award will once again be presented at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala along with several of the other top awards in college and professional football.

Moore is a five-star recruit who attended Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit, Michigan. ESPN, Rivals and 247Sports each recognized Moore with their highest recruit rating. In 2022, he completed 175 of 252 passes (69.4%) for 2,392 yards, 32 touchdowns and three interceptions. The Crusaders captured the MHSAA Division 3 state championship in both 2022 and 2021. Moore was named the Michigan Associated Press Division 3-4 Player of the Year for 2022. He enrolled at UCLA in January of 2023 after graduating from high school early.

The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award has been presented to the College Freshman Player of the Year since 2018 and is named in honor of Shaun Alexander, a former standout at the University of Alabama and with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. Past winners include; Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) - 2018, Kenneth Gainwell (Memphis)-2019, Will Anderson Jr. (Alabama) โ 2020, Brock Bowers (Georgia) โ 2021 and Drake Maye (North Carolina) 2022.

Moore and the Bruins will open the 2023 season on Saturday in Rose Bowl Stadium against Coastal Carolina. The ESPN broadcast is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. UCLA plays week two at San Diego State before returning to Pasadena for a Sept. 16 date with North Carolina Central.
