LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team was picked to finish third in the league, and a trio of Bruins were named to the preseason all-conference team as the Pac-12 announced the results of its 2024 Preseason Coaches Poll on Thursday.
UCLA received 85 points, including one first-place vote, in the poll of the league's 11 head coaches.
The Bruins' three Preseason All-Conference picks included junior infielder Duce Gourson, junior right-handed pitcher Luke Jewett, and junior infielder Cody Schrier. Both Schrier and Jewett repeated as preseason all-league picks after being selected as sophomores ahead of the 2023 campaign.
Gourson is coming off a breakout sophomore campaign that saw him lead the club in practically every offensive statistic after slashing .319/.438/.515 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs over 53 games. His standout play earned him an invite to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team over the summer. In addition to the nod from the Pac-12, Gourson has also been named a Preseason All-American by Perfect Game and Baseball America.
Jewett is set to enter the weekend rotation for UCLA in 2024 after two standout seasons in the bullpen. He led the Pac-12 in appearances (35) as a freshman in 2022, and then had a team-best 21-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio as a sophomore before absorbing a season-ending injury in early April. For his career, Jewett has posted a 4-2 record, 4.20 ERA, and a 49-14 K-BB ratio over 64 1/3 innings.
Schrier was a consensus Freshman All-American in 2022 after slashing .298/.383/.492, but was limited to just 32 games last season due to injury. He managed a .466 slugging percentage in 2023 and had several notable performances, including a four-RBI game on Opening Day against Omaha and a two-homer, four-RBI, two-stolen base outing on Mar. 3 against Tulane.
Oregon State (95) was picked to finish first in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, followed by Stanford (85). The top five was rounded out by Oregon (74) and USC (64), followed by Arizona State (50), Washington (49), California (40), Arizona (31), Utah (20), and Washington State (15).
UCLA officially opens its 2024 season next Friday, Feb. 16, at 5 p.m. PT with the first of a three-game series against Gonzaga. Single-game and season tickets are available now, and can be purchased HERE.
