TEMPE, Ariz. – Tian Fangran and Elise Wagle of the UCLA women's tennis team earned All-America recognition for their success as a doubles duo in 2023-24, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Thursday.
All-America status is bestowed upon singles players who earn a top-16 seed in the NCAA Championships singles draw, advance to the third round of the year-end tournament or finish in the top 20 of the ITA singles rankings. Doubles teams that are seeded in the top eight of the NCAA Championships doubles tournament, reach the event's quarterfinal round or complete the season in the top 10 of the ITA doubles rankings are recognized.
The tandem of Tian and Wagle came in at No. 10 when the final ITA doubles rankings were announced May 29.
Tian/Wagle teamed to go 13-4, including a 12-3 mark on the top court. The pair was 6-3 versus nationally-ranked opponents, notching five wins against top-20 foes. In the Bruins' 4-3 road victory at No. 7 Pepperdine, Tian/Wagle took down the partnership of Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen to clinch the doubles point. At the time of the match, the Wave duo was ranked second, undefeated in dual-match play and 23-1 overall. Broadus/Tjen finished the year No. 1.
The win at Pepperdine was one of a team-high eight Tian/Wagle recorded in clinching fashion. The pair prevailed in its final nine decisions and 13 of its last 14 en route to a spot in the NCAA Championships doubles draw. Tian/Wagle was tabbed the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year and each student-athlete received Academic All-America acclaim.
