MVB Downs No. 15 Flyers in Four

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (3-0) posted its 15th straight win with a four-set victory at No. 15 Lewis (1-2) on Thursday night. Scores of the non-league match were 25-23, 22-25, 28-26, 25-23.

The Bruins out blocked Lewis 15.0 to 6.5 with Guy Genis and Merrick McHenry leading the way with seven and six stuffs, respectively. Ethan Champlin led the Bruin attack with 14 kills. Andrew Rowan tied his career-best with six aces as UCLA enjoyed a 14-6 edge from the line. Ido David compiled a career-high five aces. Alex Knight added a team-high nine digs.
 
After a back-and-forth beginning, UCLA moved into a 13-11 first set lead after a McHenry ace. Zach Rama's kill made it 14-12. Lewis evened the score at 16-all. Consecutive aces from Rowan and a Champlin kill capped off a 4-0 Bruin run. UCLA errors helped Lewis close to 23-22. A service error put UCLA at set point and a Genis / Champlin block ended the frame at 25-23.
 
UCLA opened up a 7-4 lead to begin set two following an ace by David. A Champlin / McHenry block lifted the Bruins into a 10-6 edge. Lewis rallied to even the set at 12-all. Rama's swing put UCLA up 15-14, but the score was soon tied at points 16, 17 and 18. A McHenry / Champlin / David block completed a 3-0 UCLA run. Lewis battled back to knot the score at 22 with its own serving run and then finished off the set with another ace and a Bruin error for 22-25.
 
Back-to-back aces from Rowan helped end a run of 11 early ties to put UCLA in front 14-11. A pair of aces from David increased the gap to 21-15, but the host Flyers battled back to even the score at 22-all. The Bruins had to fight off a couple of Lewis set points down 24-25 and 25-26. Rama's block handed the Bruins a 27-26 lead and a Lewis error followed to complete the set at 28-26.
 
Lewis broke away first in set four with a 4-0 run which left the Flyers in front 9-13. The Bruins rallied to level the score at 14-all only to see Lewis respond with another run for a 15-19 advantage. UCLA used a tough serve by Champlin to close to 20-21. A couple more aces by David evened the score at 22 and then pushed UCLA in front 23-22. Genis / Rowan teamed up for a block to make it 24-22. The teams then traded service errors to end the set at 25-23.

The 15-match win streak is the longest by the Bruins since it won 16 straight over the end of the 2006 season and the start of the 2007 campaign. UCLA will play at No. 10 Loyola-Chicago on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT.
