January 19, 2024 | Men's Volleyball
The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (4-1) saw its 16-match win streak snapped in five sets by No. 4 Ohio State (5-0) in a battle of previously unbeaten teams on Friday evening in Austin, Texas at the First Point Collegiate Challenge. Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 13-15.
Ethan Champlin led UCLA with 18 kills, but the Bruins could not overcome 30 service errors. Cooper Robinson added a career-best 11 kills and six blocks. Ohio State hit .305 for the match to become the first team to surpass the .300 mark against the Bruins since BYU hit .311 on Feb. 18, 2023. The Buckeyes hit a combined .402 of the final three sets of the contest. It was UCLA's first setback since a four-set loss to Hawai'i on Mar. 11, 2023 in Honolulu. Action continues from Texas on Saturday when the Bruins take on No. 7 Penn State.
UCLA surged to the early lead to begin set one and led 4-1 following an ace by Champlin. After Ohio State closed to 6-5, UCLA used kills from Ido David and Champlin to move out to an 11-7 advantage. The Buckeyes closed to 14-12, but UCLA answered with a couple of Champlin kills for a 17-14 edge. Merrick McHenry served up an ace to put UCLA ahead 20-16. A pair of kills by Guy Genis pushed the Bruins into a 23-17 lead on the way to securing the set at 25-19. Champlin tallied seven kills in the opening frame.
The Buckeyes regrouped and opened up a 1-5 gap to start set two. UCLA closed to 7-8 on a kill by Robinson. A Champlin swing sliced the OSU lead to 9-14. After the Buckeyes went up 12-17 on a Bruin service error, Robinson produced two kills and a solo block to narrow the deficit to 16-18. A Champlin spike evened the ledger at 19-all. The score was then tied at points 20, 21, 22 and 23. Another Robinson kill put UCLA at set point at 24-23. Genis and Robinson then teamed up on a block to end the set at 25-23. Champlin registered another seven kills in the set.
Set three began as a back-and-forth affair until the Buckeyes put three straight points together for a 7-10 advantage. A David kill snapped that streak, but OSU quickly pulled back out to a 11-14 edge. A Champlin kill made it 14-16 and an Andrew Rowan ace left the Bruins down 16-18. However, the Buckeyes tallied the next four points to go ahead 16-22. Grant Sloane teamed with McHenry and Champlin on a block to make it 17-22, but OSU scored three of the next four points for a 18-25 win. Ohio State hit .450 for the set.
